PRINCE AT JO’BURG
TUMULTUOUS DEMONSTRATIONS. (Reuter.) i CAPE TOAVN, June 23. Johannesburg gave the Prince of Wales a tremendous and . overwhelming reception. The short route from the station to, the City Hall was densely lined. The crowds were so great that there were many fainting cases despite the cold weather. The cheering was continuous and prolonged. , Replying to a tumultuous welcome at the City Hall, the Prince created ,a profound impression by a masterly speech wherein he appealed for a frank discussion of the differences arising out of the mining situation, and better appreciation of the individual difficulties, which he was confident could he solved by the exercise of goodwill and honest endeavour. BIRTH DAY GREETING S. CAPE TOAVN, June 23. Congratulatory messages are pouring into Johannesburg from all over the world, on the occasion of the Prince of Wales’ birthday, the second spent in the Dominions. • A deputation from the (Municipality and the Chamber of Mines presented him with a- magnificent gold casket. The Prince spent the morning touring thirty miles • through the East Rand, and was tumultuously welcomed at the numerous mining towps, the population of which .turned out en masse.
