BULLER NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.)
WESTPORT, May 23. Mr Armstrong, M.P. for Christchurch East, who spoke at the Labour social in the Friendly Societies’ Hall on Thursday evening; addressed a public meeting in the Town Hall last evening. Numerous counter attractions no doubt affected the attendance. Mr Armstrong made a big plea for funds to carry out Labour’s big programme, to contest all seats at the coming general elections, and received a ready response from some of his hearers, one substantial cheque being promised. Miss Bruce, who is shortly severing her connection with the Westport Technical High School teaching staff, was entertained at the residence of Mrs N. Watson, yesterday • afternoon, Mrs A. Miller being associated with Mrs Watson as hostess. There was a largo gathering of lady friends, and during the course of the afternoon Mrs Watson and Mrs Miller presented Miss Bruce with a handsome candlestick and toilet box, for both of which Miss Bruch suitably responded. Competitions wore held and Miss Bruce rendered several songs, in English and French.
Mr J. Burley has arrived in town with a bagful of samples of slate from the quarry in the Buller Gorge, distant 16 miles from Westport. It looks as if this will become a big commercial proposition. Mr Burley said: “When wgf put in a. shot, the slate carfie slithering down the mountain like panes of glass.” With coal, timber and slate, also gold, remembering th© days of the old diggings, the Buller Gorge seems to possess a wealth that is worth giving considerable attentioii to.
