On Wednesday evening at the Landino Schoolroom, a social evening wag . tendered to Miss O’Regan, who has just vacated the position of postmistress at the Landing. Miss O’Regan has held the position since the Post Office was first established in the locality, and her many friends in the locality wished to express their regret at her departure, and present her with a token of their esteem. In asking the guest of the evening to accept a present of a solid leather suit case and travelling rug, Mr Jas. B. Stevenson made feeling reference to Miss o’Regan’s long residence in the locality and her many acts of courtesy to the residents, all of whom regretted that Miss O’Regan’s health required her departure. During the evening violin solos, recitations, and vocal items were contributed, and after supper, the floor was cleared for dancing, the music for whicl\was supplied by Mrs Tremain and ' Messrs Southon and Best, the entertainment closing with the National Anthem and “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow." Mr Jas. Underwood of Big River, is in town at present, suffering from a poisoned finger. At Wesley Schoolroom last evening. the local branch of the New Zealand Alliance tendered a welcome social to Rev. Mr Jackson, who at ■ one time was stationed at Reefton. Word has been received at Reefton that the Mines Department had agreed to grant a subsidy of £lOOO towards further development work at the Wealth of Nations Mine. The shareholders of this concern deserve a share of luck, and it is hoped that they will receive a reward for their faith and labour ere this amount is expended.
