The Hospital Board decided to hold an enquiry on the recent death in the hospital of James Robertson who swallowed a dental plate. This was not removed at once, and when an external operation was about to commence, the patient collapsed. KILLED IN BUSH; ‘ AUCKLAND, May 21. A well-known Tuakau resident, Mr Arthur 0., Lapwood, was killed at Te Kohunga yesterday, while engaged in cutting a track through some bush for a motor truck, with which he was conveying a load of flax into Tuakau. It is understood that a tree fell on his chest. He was a widower, aged 37 years, and leaves four children under the age of eleven. TEACHERS’ APPEAL BOARD ' WELLINGTON, May 21. The Teachers' Appeal Board to hear appeals in connection with the grading of primary school teachers will be: Messrs A. D. Thomson (chairman), F. H. AUCKLAND, May 21. \ At the Supreme Court, the claim by Henry John Saulbrey for £l5OO damages from Davis D. W. Martin (medical practitioner) and James Thomas Douce (architect) for the death of his daughter, Mrs Stevens, in a motor car accident at Ngaruawahia, was concluded to-night. The jury re hinted a verdict that the accident was due to the negligence of Martin, and assessed the damages at £9OO. It exonerated Douce. A motion for judgment.was deferred. JOURNALISTS’ AWARD. WANGANUI, May 21.. A complete agreement was reached at the Conciliation Council on the Wellington (Jqunty Journalists dispute. The new -wages settle involves a reduction of 5/- in cadets’ wages. Juniors’ wages remain as before. General reporters receive 12/6 per week increase, and senior reporters 5/- increase. A new hours’ clause allows the spread of the work to be increased if time off is allowed a worker during the day. CHRISTCHUR CH COMPETITIONS. CHRISTCHURCH, May 22. CHRISTCHURCH, May 22. At the Supremo Court the following prisoners were sentenced :—John 1 Alexander Robertson, issuing valueless cheques, two years’ imprisonment concurrent with a Dunedin sentence for theft. Charles Royal Porter, indecent assault, five years’ imprisonment. Frederick Charles Richmond, breaking, entering and theft, three years’ imprisonment. John Joseph Kiesanowski, burglary, two imprisonment. George Cabel Price, indecent assault was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon. Whiteford Jukes Curtis, theft, two years’ probation.

Joseph Brown, forgery and theft of postal packet, three years’ probation. John Asher, theft, eighteen months’ imprisonment. Sydney Aderton Christmas, indecent assault, one year’s imprisonment. Clive Argyle Wood, false pretences, two years in gaol.
