ITALY’S DEBTS
CONCESSIONS DEMANDED.
“ENTITLED TO. SOMETHING;” ,
(Reuter.)
, ROME, May 21.
Premier Mussolini said that Italy’s war debt was a hundred milliard lire, whereof fifty milliards were due to America, who, contrary to press reports, had not presented any official demand for the opening of immediate negotiations, for liquidation of the debt, but friendly lion-official conversations had occurred. ( ‘‘ltaly would do her utmost to meet debts, as far as her economic ‘situation permitted, but in view of Italy’s great sacrifices in the war, and the fact that her wealth was only onefifth that of France, and incomparable with that of Britain, Italy was entitled to something more than the most favoured nation treatment. If a moratorium were accorded other debtor nations, he would ask for a still longer moratorium for - Italy, It was manifestly unfair to give\a conquered nation like Germany, better treatment than that given to one ol tlie Allies.”
