DRUNKEN MOTORIST
IMPRISONMENT ORDERED.
(Per Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, Alay 20. A well-known ’bus proprietor of Auckland, J. Trewhela, appeared on a summons at the Police Court this morning, when he was charged with being in charge of a motor ’bus on Grafton Bridge, while in a state of intoxication.
Air. G. G. ■' Sullivan, who appeared for Trewhela, in pleading guilty, said that no damage was done either to the ’bus dr to pedestrians. The defendant was a well-known man, who owned three large sight-seeing ’buses. Air. Sullivan said that recently it had been the practice of the Court to inflict fines on motorists who were caught while being in a state of intoxication, and were not arrested by the police. Jn view of the facts of the case, and of the recent practice of the Court in such cases, counsel pleaded that as if the defendant was sent to prison, it would practically ruin his business, would the Alagistrate inflict a fine in this case?
Air. Poynton: ‘‘l have given warnings times out of number. Penalties in such cases would have to be inflicted. A motor ’bus is far more dangerous than an ordinary motor car, as it carries more passengers. In this case, I cannot impose a fine. The defendant will' be sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment.
