Greymouth Evening Star. AND BRUNNERTON ADVOCATE THURSDAY, MAY 21st:, 1925. BOROUGH STREETS.

The new Borough Council will hold its first meeting, this evening, and will have a fair amount of business before it. The vote of confidence passed by the electors in permitting the Councillors to be unopposed, last month, will of course, be construed by them not as a belief that the townsmen were indifferent as to the personnel of the Council, but an encouragement to continue the good work of improving the town. 'There is still much to be done in this respect, notably where roads and footpaths are concerned. This season of the year is not the best for the essential repairs, but such work should be regarded by Councillors as one of urgency. Pot-holes- in the roads -make - their - -unwelcome appearanceshortly after, such thoroughfares have received attention; which suggests that the

Cotincir must seek some more permanent material for., road-repairs. It would- lie clieap'er in the long run to have tlie Work done properly,' and much more satisfactory. As for the footpaths, the. condition of some of the streets-—and main; avenues, at that —is a disgrace. Tainui Street, for instance, on the western side lias been for far too,' long, a real danger to pedestrians!? owing to. the deplorable state of the footpath, and the 1 remedying of this should be one of the-new Council’s first cares. Shakespeare Street, Sawyer’s Cteek Road, and other, much-used, footpaths also require urgent attention. On this subject Of footpaths' and roads, few townsmen are prepared to be complimentary to the Borough Council, nor is the grievance of short standing. Doubtless, local indignation is well-known to the Councillors, and these should endeavour to meet the wishes of. those they represent. There is no serious controversy before. Councillors, who, if they reject the temptation to be loquacious on matters that are of little importance, such as Sunday football,, will have full opportunity to attend to administrative items that more affect the town’s welfare.

BRITAIN AND EGYPT. The resignation of Lord Allenby als High Commissioner in ' Egypt is now officially confirmed), and will’ probably be welcomed by all concerned. Lord Allenby has not had a very easy time during the six years or so he has acted, and he will" doubtless be glad to be relieved of the burdens of office. His successor Sir George Lloyd, .won laurels, as Governor of Bombay from 1918-23, and has long been an' authority on Eastern affairs, his extensive travels including the land in which he now has to,speak for Britain. He will arrive at Cairo at a 1 critical dime, much depending on the results‘of the general elections in Egypt due to take place this month. It will.be remembered that similar . pollings were held a few months back, following the murder of the Sirdar, but the new Parliament was dissolved within ten' hours of its convention, owing to the support given to Zaghlul Pasha against the new Ministry’s nominees. Things have been quieter since, but whether this means - that the Government will gain seats at the coming elections cannot be confidently stated. The cause of peace in Egypt would be furthered by such Ministerial triumph, but whatever happens, Britain has made it quite plain to Egypt that no nonsense will be stood from her, and the new High Commissioner’s appointment does not suggest that further concessions are probable.
