COMPETITIONS SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the West Coast Competitions Society was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present Messrs 11. F. Doogan, president' (in the 1 - chair), JaSi- Melndoe, E. 1 I. Lord-, J. Bi Kent; /A.,- A. Adams, W. Heinz, H. Jamieson, JT. Ames, and the Secretary (Mr R. T. Bush) The annual report was read and approved , . The election of officers for the ensuing' year; resulted as follow: —President, Mr./. H., F. Doogan; vice-presi-dent,. Mr A' A., Adams; treasurer, Mr M.. Keating secretary, Mr 1 R. T. Bush; auditor, Mr A. Hi ■ Naylor; executive, the delegtes from the constituent clubs. The recommendations' from the subcommittee were approved as follow: — Alteration to rules : “That rule '2O be amended to read . . .in computing the.marks for the club championships, the’ marks.on,the recalls be not taken into consideration.” That Rule 19 be amended to read “The Committee reserves the right to withhold (if thought fit) the .first prize where :there m io competition' (i.e., may award the equivalent: of the second prize only), and in classes where there are less than four competitors, no second prize will be awarded.” That Rule 22: be amended by the deletion of 80a (essay). It was. resolved that, with a view ,to securing the service, of visiting Australian judges, the of the Competitions be, 11 possible, 'arranged to fit in with those of other societies whose festival is hold about\the same ti"ie as this Society’s, also, for the pirpose <u permitting local competitor to mrend outside festivals if they dosve to do so. The Secretary was directed In write to the Federation of Competition Societies regarding, particulars of membership, and liability attaching thereto. It was decided ,in view of.,.the approaching festival, to endeavour-to arrange for a session of inter-club de-, bates. Mr J. B. Kent offered to donate an honours board for the pur-, pose of keeping a record of the winning teams. ' ■
In accepting election to the position of President 'for a further term, Mr Doogan said he would, as in the past,: do all he could to assist the Society. He believed in the Competition movement, and wished the younger members of clubs would realise the. benefits to be derived from competing and practising impromptu speakifig. He regretted that. Mr Mclndoe’s removal would necessitate another vice-presi-dent being elected in his stead. He specially commended his work, both as a competitor and a committeeman at the festivals, and hoped he would continue as a competitor at Invercargill. Mr Mclndoe thanked'the. President for his flattering references. He thought he would retire from competing when he left Grey month. Ho felt the good done by competing. It had been beneficial in his own case. He hoped the Society would continue to do good work. ,and be successful in every way. • • ' , The Secretary was instructed lo an range with Mr Behan for the use of the Town Hall for Competitions week. The tenders of the two local,papers for the printing of the Book olu Words and programmes respectively were ac-. copied. The date for the closing of the entries was fixed for August 1, and the dates of the. festival, from August 31 to September 7 inclusive.
