SHOT AT EMPLOYEE
SENSATION ON DREDGE. (Special to* "Star.”) HOKITIKA,, April 30.£ During the last "shift yesterday, at the Rimu Dredging Company s . electrical dredge, a sensational incident occurred, which might have resulted seriously for at least one of the employees, ' Albert Thomas, on duty at the time. At about 10.30 p.m., Thomas, whose work is to control the screen ami stacker at the sterri of the,dredge, wak standing at his post near the wiridoU, z wheii a rifle shot crashed through the glass, close to his head, and then passed through' a board an inch thick before it fell on the tables. , , Naturally hlarmed,. Thomas' called his mates, • and shortly afterwards the Dredgemaster (summoned- by telephone), accompanied by the Sergeant of Police, arrived and made a careful search in the vicinity of the dredge dam, but failed to discover any sign of the perpetrator. ; Apparently the unknown assailant had stationed himself in a depression on the.summit of the .tailings, dump', and waited till the swing of the dredge brought the window' into his . line of fire, Avheii a person standing by tte> controllers would fbnii a good target in the light of. the electric lanip' above his head. The .motive of the attack, whether it. practical joke, or something more sinister, is not clear. ' V '
