BULLER NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent). WESTPORT, April 30. The polling for the three seats on the Buller Hospital Board proceeded very quietly yesterday, although it was evident in the afternoon that the candidates were busying themselves to see that as many electors as possible were induced to go to the booths and record their votes. There were five candidates and only three seats. The result Was declared, at ■ 8 o’clock and was as follows: C. N. ' Greenland (sitting member) 567;'W. Caldwell (sitting member) 484: E. > R. Fox 425, Mrs. Patterson 388; the s Rev. Miller 258. It was generally ac- ) cepted that Mr. Greenland would head ' the poll with Mr. Caldwell as runner up, but there was some doubt whether Mr. Fox or Mrs. Patterson would fill j third place. However, Mr. Fox got, E or is believes to have got, a good business vote, which enabled him to secure the third seat. The Rev. Mil- ’ lev’s position at the bottom of the poll was not unexpected. He is a good worker, who is never afraid to voice his opinions, and faithfully and cap- . ably discharge any duties entrusted ; to him, but there was a pretty general opinion that it was not desir- • able to have a Minister of any de- ■ nomination on the Board. After the ■ declaration of the poll, the success- - ful candidates returned thanks, also 5 the Mayor, Mr. Menzies, for his re- > election unopposed. In the course of ’ the latter’s remarks, he said the hy--1 dro electric scheme was almost com- ’ pleted, except for the reticulation of ’ the town and there was a balance in 1 hand of the loan money of £1728. He I was not sure whether this would complete the works, but, if not, it would ’ not fall far short of doing so. Mr. A. E. Brockett, the retiring director of Westport Technical High - School,' and Mrs. Brockett, were fareWelled by present and past pupils at a social in St. John’s Hall last evening and made the receipient of presentations, a shaving set to Mr. Brockett and a Doulton vase to Mrs. Brockett. Eulogistic speeches were made by Mr. Curtis, who made the presentations, and Misses Erlin Sin1 sted, Elsie Curtis and Master Allan Larsen, Mr. Brockett replying. Dances and games followed with songs by Misses M. Tulloch, Mr. Hay MacKenzie Bruce, and a violin solo by Master Kessel. Miss Gladys McKenzie won a competition. A very pleasant evening concluded about midnight Miss’ Champion, of the local telephone bureau staff, on transfer to Christchurch, was entertained at the Elite tea rooms on Tuesday evening by the Westport Ladies’ Hockey Club and presented with a useful suitcase. Miss Champion has been one of the most active members of the Club and her departure will be a distinct loss to it. The Borough Council held its closing meeting last night, when congratulatory speeches were made by the Mayor and Council and expressions of regret passed at the retire- ’ ment of Crs. P. L. Payne and J. H. Enright, both of whom had done excellent work in the Council.
