' (Our Own Correspondent). v ' f WESTPORT, April 29. The Buller Progress League held its annual* meeting last evening, with Mr E. I R. Fox, vice-president, in the chair and a good attendance of members. The annual report was adopted. Officers were elected for the ensuing year as follow President, Mr N. Parker; vice-president, Rev. A. Miller; treasurer, Mr F. S. Wood (re-elected); -finance committee, President, VicePresident, Treasurer and Messrs do /Tourettes and Sargisson. Other committees were elected, with some variations in the personnel. It was decided that the Education and Electrical ’Committees were not required. The new President mentioned as important works to be kept in view during the year:—Buller Gorge Railway; th/e Coastal Road Harbour improvements. It was decided to circularise various bodies down the Coast in regard, to the coastal roads. The manner in, which protection is afforded the farmihg industries while penalties - are placed on mining developments was considerably discussed, mention being made of.the injustice done to the gold who was deprived of the market value of his gold while the dairy farmer got a subsidy on his butter fat' production. \of the import duties on flour, wheat and’ other farm products, while no pro-

Members of the Nelson Education * Board visited Denniston, Burnett’s Face, Millertori, Stockton and Hectoi 1 schools yesterday, returning to Westport in the evening. To-day the Board leaves for Karamea on a round of inspection of the schools in that district and returns to Westport on Thursday. The following are the' names of the new directors of the National Portland Cement Co., Ltd., as constituted at the last meeting held in Wellington on April 23, this -company being • formed to exploit the lime and mineral deposits of Cape Foulwind : —W. F. Barber (chairman ofi the Wellington Woollen Mills, Ltd.), H. Bignell (chairman of the Wanganui Harbour Board), H- Mainland (Wellington), W. Cabe (Messrs Cable and Co., iron founders, Wellington), H. Vickerman (Messrs Vickerman and Lancaster, electrical engineers), H. R. Young (Westport). For the ladies’ eclectic match on the Westport Golf Links on Saturday the drawings are:—Mrs Wilson 4 v. Mrs Lawry 17, Mrs Bird 6 v. Miss Beltjeman 11, Miss Findlay 18 v. H. Hill. The Hon. W. H. Mclntyre was appointed acting-chairman during the absence in England of the chairman, Mr W. O. Smith. The Board’s annual report was read and ordered to be circulated; the same to be discussed at the next meeting of the Board. The Secretary’s list of urgent works to be forwarded to the Department was approved, with one addition. It was decided that the term holidays be from August 15 to September It was resolved that the itinerary of the Agricultural Instructor be drawn up by the Board and the Senior Inspector. . The Department wrote agreeing to the width of corridors in large schools being 7ft. z The Department advised that the subsidy on dental clinics would be increased in approved cases froifi £2 to £!•—Committees to be circularised to that effect. The Department authorised the Board to proceed with establishing a District High School at Granity. The Board agreed to co-operate in endeavouring to haye subsidies towards purchase of gramophones reinstated. The Board endorsed the report of the Instructor of Agriculture on the proposal to plant trees in the school, grounds. Teacherships were dealt with as follow : Black’s Point—Catherine Hogan to be transferred to this school. Pakawau—Kenneth Collins to be recommended. Hinekaka—Elikabeth Culling to be recommended.. Stanley BrookColin E. Tavener to be recommended. Reefton—Margaret Hutton to be recommended.
