RACING NEWS AND'NOTES. . 1 (By “Arlington.”) { There will .be racing to-morrow at South Canterbury and Marlborough. Ravenna should lead the field home in the Timaru Cup. 7 Red Kriss and Royal Star would appear to hold the Tekapo Hurdle field at South Canterbury safe. Rich Prize will start favourite in the Gladstone Hack Handicap. Some Abbey might prove costly to local supporters in the Electric Stakes. Gold Brick and Laughie are both fast over five furlongs. If properly labelled, Ayrbum must be a hard proposition in the Smith- 1 field Handicap. • Goosestep cannot be recommended under 9st. in th® Rosewill Hack Handicap, while the company looks too classy \ for Lord Leslie. Retrospect should beat both the local horses. Kuia and Prince Charleroi will represent local stables 1 in the Doncaster Welter, and of the pair I fancy the latter will prove the better at the weights. - However, Kilbarry looks likely to beat both the local horset. With anything like a good run. the Waterlea Cup at Marlborough go to Stream. . ( ■ ’ Ardfinnan and Misgovern should pay their way in anything in which they start at Marlborough. E. Ludlow- mounts at Marlborough to-morrow will include Gamecock, Bonatic, Crown Star and Pink RoseR. Johnstone has been engaged to ride Red Kriss and Kipling at the' South * Canterbury meeting. He will leave immediately after the gathering for Hawera, where he Will ride Te Toa in his engagements. ■ J. B .Pearson did not keep Incursio long. He; railed the chestnut gelding home to Wingatui on Monday. . Later advice / received from Melbourne from Fred Gray, states that he is in very poor health, and is at present in the Glenelg Hospital, wherehe is likely to be for an indefinite pe-' riod 1 . The plough was onen for fast worjc at Riccarton on Tuesday morning, when the following were amongst those worked :-r
Prompter was restricted to easy pacing once round on the plough, moving well. Cutts Bros.’ team, including Barn Owl, Passing Hour, . Retrospect and. Rich Prize, were restricted to easy pacing. The horses named are all due to race at South Canterbury, where they should run well. Red Kriss and Solfello finished on terms ovdr five furlongs, ran in 1.5. Gay Juliet was responsible for a brilliant performance over five furlongs. Ferino strode over seven furlongs pleasingly in 1.32 3-5. « Hidden Mystery and Lucinette were associated in a dash over half a. mile, which occupied 51secs. Dutch Courage and Kukume could have improved on the 1.19 it took them to run six furlongs. Petunia (J. R. Kaan) and Grim Joke (I. Tilson) were schooled over four flights of hurdles. ’ Grim Joke always held the upper’ hand, and finished up his task a couple of lengths to the good;
