BALLOT PAPER ERROR. ( (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 29. 1? 11 /, li’ne after the opening of the poll this morningl consternation was caused among the officials at the main polling bootli at the Town Hall by the discovery that the ballot papers for the election of the, city members of the Harbour Board contained a wrong direction. These ballot papers were headed, “City of Auckland —Election of three members of the Auckland Harbour Board. ” Then followed the names of nine candidates, the voter being directed to place- a cross against the names pf the candidates for whom he ■ desired to vote. The number of members to bp returned for the city is four, and not lhe mistake was not discovered till an elector drew attention to it at about 9.30, oi- half an hour after the poll opened. By that time, two or three hundred electors had recorded their votes. After the discovery was made, the polling clerks were set to work marking out the word “three” and substituting “lour” in pencil. By that time, however, it seemed probable that many of the electors had obeyed the erroneous instruction on their and' had voted for three candidates. How many did so vote will be discovered after the papers are scrutinised to-night. ■lt is considered inevitable that the. result of this mistake will be a costly one, necessitating another election.
