There is little doubt that we moderns lilt the weight of flatlihg years (says the Sydney “Bulletin”). Even a Rug. by League football final could not offer a red-blooded equivalent to tho pleasant afternoon forecasted in the subjoined copy of a sporting handbill dated Anzac Day, or, to be exact, April 25, 1702. It is doubtful, too, if opr finest movie advertisement writers could set out such an anticipatory thriller:— “At the. Bear Garden, Hockley, in the Hole." These are to give notice to all gentlemen,,.gamesfers apd others that on this present Monday _a great match is to be fought by a baldfaced Dog of Middlesex against a fellow Dog of Cow Cross for a Guinea .each Dog, five let-goes out of hand, which goes fairest and furthest wins all. Also a great mad Bull is to be turned loose in the Game Place with Fireworks all over him, and two or threfc Cats ty’d to his tail and Dogs after them. Also otlierivariety of Bull, baiting and Bear-baiting, Beginning at two of the Clock.” Note the distinction then drawn between , ‘gentlemen’ and ‘gamesters’,; these last, presumably, the equivalent of our ‘sports’ as opposed to ‘sportsmen.’ ' I
