THE TAKAPO CASE. . OWNER & HORSE DISQUALIFIED. (Per Press Association.) ' NEW PLYMOUTH, April 26. Arising from the Judicial Committee's enquiries in connexion with the nominating of the black gelding Sweet Prince,' by Swget Patch —Princess Ena, as Takapo, by Brooklyn—Nancy, for two events’ at the Taranaki Trotting Club’s Meeting on April 18, 1925, also for wilfully making a number of false statements when giving evidence before the committee, it was resolved unanimously that:— (1) Harry Daniels, of Waverley, be disqualified for three years. . (2) That the black gelding Sweet Prince entered as Takapo be disqualified for three years.

According to the records Takapo would be a horse about 26 years old, but Sweet Prince is only about half that age, and when the horse alleged to be Sweet Prince was seized a veterinary surgeon was called to . examine him rwith a view to deciding the age. Neither horse had a record worth anything and would be entitled to be placed on the limit .in any race nowadays, and it i,s puzzling to know what benefit was tb be gained by changing the name of a horse if, as is suspected, Takapo is really Sweet Prince. RACING NEWS AND NOTES. (By “Arlington.”) Sir Geo. Clifford will be represented at South Canterbury by Rich Prize, Retrospect and Bam Owl, and the trio should collect a fair share of the shekels, • t . Mr. A. Grogan is reported to have sold Lord Leslie to a Coal Creek owner.

The Coast, will be well'represented at th§ South Canterbury meeting, and some, of the stake money should come ;thn> way, / I W. Holmes has recommissioned Lytup. and the Clarenceux mare looks well after her. spell. Prince Ferouz has been turned out for a long spell on his owner’s property at Camerons, and may not be raced again until the Coast meetings at the’ end of the year. With The Hawk engaged in the Hawke’s Bay Cup considerable interest has been taken in the handicap he was likely to get against the moderate class mile and a-half horses he was pitted against. The Hawk has never won a mile and a-half race, andi he is not a stayer, but in placing him on the lOst mark Mr. Coyle has not been unduly harsh with hinj. Prior to the good form he showed at the last Melbourne Cup meeting The Hawk was given 8-10 in the big two-mile race, and earlier in the season, over the mile and a-half, of the A.J.C. Metropolitan, «he received 9.5. As the result of his good form he was placed at the top of the list with .10.5 in the recent Doncaster- Handicap, but that is only an eight-furlong event, a distance well within The Hawk’s compass, and he ran unplaced. The opposition* in each case was, of course, . considerably superior to what he will meet at with the possible exception of Fool’s Paradise, and all things considered, The Hawk has received a good invitation to take his place in the field. The Hawke’s Bay Cup, it’may be noted in passing, has never been won with lOst. Los Angelos, with 9.10, holds the weight-carrying record.

A fruitful topic of conversation in Christchurch during Easter week was the “class” for the next Trotting Cup. That the limit will be shortened is certain, but opinions differed as to whether the figure will be 4.29 or 4.28. The two thousand-pounders at Addington recently furnished a strong argument for a 4.28 class, as in those races Sheik, Onyx. Realm, Great Bingen, Vilo, Logan Chief, and Away were all handicapped on 4.28 or better. Other horses with a 4.28 qualification include Great Hope, Man o’ War, Taraire, First Carbine, Dolly Dillon, Acron, Alto Chimes, and others, and even if no more horses .qualify in the meantime, a field of ten or a, dozen 4.28 two-milers could be depended upon. That number is as many' as is desirable in big races if all horses are to have a chance. This was demonstrated in the High Class Handicap on the second day, when seven or eight horses raced over the last lap bunched behind Locanda Mac, and it was evident that two or three of theiu, Acron and Dolly Dillon in particular, could have been closer up if they could have" got a clearer run. Eight horses in the speed class are quite enough to start in a short harness race on six-furlong track.
