MARRIAGE BILL
PASSED BY ASSEMBLY. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, March 25. The New South Wales Assembly passed the Marriage Law Amendment Bill through all stages, and sent the measure to the Legislative Council, which will deal with it on Thursday' night. When the Bill was in Committee, Mr Lang (Labour Leader) submitted an amendment to the vital clause. The clause in question reads: — “Every person commits an" offence, and is liable to conviction, and to a penalty not exceeding £lOO, and to imprisonment not exceeding twelve months, who alleges any persons lawfully married are not truly and sufficiently married.” Mr Lang’s amendment added to this clause the words:—“According to the laws of the State.” The Labour Leader appealed to the Government to accept this amendment, and thereby show its sincerity. Mr Ley, in. reply, said: There ri no need for the amendment, as the clause was explicit and said what it meant. There were several heated Labour speeches in favour of Mi- Lang’s amendment. After much disorder the amendment was defeated by 47 to 34. The Bill was then passed through all the remaining stages.
