RACING NEWS AND NOTES

(By “Arlington.”) Nominations for the Kumara Racing Club’s Meeting close to-night. The Nelson Trotting Club, at a meeting, decided to exercise the extra, permit recently allocated to it on Saturday, May 9. Castellan and Fresco are having a few days 1 spell at Riccarton. In all probability their next appearance will be on the Coast at Easter. Sayonora, who showed such promising form at the West Coast meetings at the New Year, is to be turned out for a long spell. He is still suffering from a side trouble. Master Hand will occupy Sayonora’s box in R. Longley’s establishment. This gelding, who made his debut ovei’ the battens at Ashburton last season and displayed considerable promise, will probably be seen out on the Coast ac Easter. The sale is reported of the pacing gelding Event from Miss Gunn to the Ashburton owner-trainer, R. McDonnell, who bred the 'son of Brent Locanda and Evelyn. What a great chance Palestrina has been given with 7.4 in the Great Autumn Handicap? i A four-year-old gelding by Sarto from Red Cross, the dam of Fiery Cross, has joined F. Christmas’s string at Riccarton. The amount of money that poured into the machine for Ayrbum in the Members’ Handicap at Oamaru on Monday half convinced the crowd that it was only a question of putting up his number, but when it came to business The Harp came at him and had him beaten a furlong from home. General entries for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Autumn meeting close on Friday night. Acceptances for the Great Easter, and Autumn Handicaps are due at the same time. Though Red Wing is not engaged at Wellington to-day, it is probable that J. B. Pearson will start him in the Trentham Gold Cup on Saturday. T. H. Gillett was due to leave for the north to-day with Count Cavour and Charlatan. They will race at the Manawatu meeting next week, and will then go on to Auckland. Count Cavour will contest the Awapuni Gold Cup and Great Northern St. Leger. The five-year-old mare Miss Minerva, by Winkie from Lady Minerva, is the latest addition to R. Emerson’s stable. When next she races she will carry the colours of Mr. W*. Parsons. Miss Minerva is just the sort that would win a lot of races at the Coast Easter meetings.
