GLAND TREATMENT

MARVELLOUS TRANSFORMATION SYDNEY, March 11. The cablegrams told us the other day that an aristocratic babe, born hideously ugly, was subjected to treatment consisting mostly of the administration of gland extract, with the result that it was transformed into a beautiful child. Reports from Melbourne tell of an equally remarkable case. The daughter of a well-known Melbourne auctioneer was an imbecile from birth —and, as is often the case, the absence of intelligence made the poor thing physically repellent. She was hideously uglyUnable to walk, talk, or understand what was said around her, she grew until she was 16 years of age. She was practically in the condition of a new-born child. She was a squatfeatured, grimacing dwarf, who had to be dressed and undressed. Her only speech was an unmeaning cry. She was kept in strict seclusion and was always referred to as “the baby.” The announcements .of what the thyroid gland could do were read with interest by a Melbourne doctor, and he determined to experiment with this child, which he had known for years. He administered a few drops of the gland extract. f The result was astounding. The six-teen-year-old child could almost be seen growing. It developed in the same way as would a child of less than twelve months, but very much faster. In a few months it was beginning to talk and walk, and in a year it showed every sign of intelligence and health. The remarkable thing was that, as the brain overhauled the body, the girl’s physical appearance clianged. Instead of being hideous, she 'became normal in appearance, and from that she passed on to become good-looking. T<£day, this girl is quite pretty and attractive. Physically, she is somewhat undersized, and her intelligence is scarcely up to that of her contemporaries, but she is making progress every day. By the time she is 21, thanks to the miracle of the thyroid glands, she should be able to take her normal place in the world.
