V An alarm of fire was given at 9.25 o’clock last evening, first by one of the engine whistles on the wharf, and immediately caftei- by the bell at the Central Fire Station. The cause of’ the alarm was a chimney at the Sailors’ Rest, in Gresson Street, catching fire. The Brigade was quickly on the scene and the fire quenched.

There is no provision in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1924, or its regulations empowering a local body to refuse a motor-driver’s license to any applicant who has had, Iv's license cancelled for misconduct. This omission was noted in a report to the Auckland City Council by the traffic inspector, who suggested that in view of the Targe number of motorists whjose licenses have been cancelled, there should be provision made in the regulations for referring delinquents to the council or a magistrate before another licensee was issued. While conversing with a deputation of workers on the Tutira section of the East Coast railway in Esk Valley, the Minister of Railways (the. Hon. J. G. Coates) said : Generally speaking the men employed on our works have stuck to us splendidly, in a, manner not “known before in the history of th. country. The deputation were intro, duced by Mr Jas. O’Brien, M.P. One from the Kumara Miners' Association asked for relief from payment of rents and threats of prosecution for back rents for the old miners and pensioners. The Minister said he did not want to see the old people molested. The Kumara Medical’Association asked for a grant towards the cost of paying the doctor. The members were prepared to pay a levy of £3 a year per member, and asked for the grant so that they might be assured of medical services when required.' The. Minister premised to bring the question before Sir Maui Pomare. The settlers from Teremakau Settlement sent a request flor the completion of Payne’s Gully, road. The Minister of Public Works had promised the money, when available, and they had got no further. The settlers would be glad to do a portion of the work. Mr Anderson said he would' bring the matter before the Minister for Public Works. :

A casual remark made' by Dr. E. Marsden, Assistant-Director of Educations in returning thanks for the welcome extended to him on his return from San Francisco at the Rotai-y Club luncheon at Wellington created loud and prolonged laughter.
