Giving evidence before the Federal Health- Commission, Dr Springthorpe i said that from 1918 to 1922, Australia lost by death 112,677 children under the age of five. ' The Plunket system in New Zealand had reduced the corresponding death rate to three per thousand. The Commonwealth infantile death rate was 61 per .1000, compared with 41 in New Zealand. Victoria had the highest infantile death rate.
