WAIPAWA, Jan. 16.
An Interesting ca?e under the Land Agents Aci'Was heard by Magistrate Dyer yesterday. ‘ *L. Hollings was charged with carrying on the business of a land agent without a licensp. The evidence- disclosed that‘'he.:ma'de one sale , and several efforts to sell the same property. The magistrate' held this constituted continuity of business, and was d?°t an. isolated case. He imposed ,the full penalty of £5O, defendant having received £137 commission to which he ; was not entitled. .' LABOUR .AND RAILWAYS. WESTPORT, January 16. Mr H. E. . Holland, M.P., addressed the Tekuha railway workers last even- - ing. He said that the Commission’s report . contairied ..useful recommendations, _ but he ddubted if the money spent was justified. .He could not find anything in the report z .of a local -Commission could not hpve put there. Dominion men should have had an opportunity to apply for Mr Fay’s position. The Board did not suit the; Labour Party unless it included elected representatives of the workers’ departments affected. He outlined his policy at the next election, and said that there would be eighty Labour, candidates.
; SCHOOL APPOINTMENTS WELLINGTON, January 14. Judgment was given to-day by . Mr. Justice Hosking in a case of Interest to teachers. TllosJ Kane had asked for a writ of mandamus against tlie Education Board oh the grounds of its failure to appoint a headmaster for the Mt. Cook SchQol from the applicants who answered the advertisement. The Judge held that there was nothing to compel the Board to make a ; Selection from such applicants if none was considered suitable, and that it had the right to invite further applications. The case was dismissed with £3O costs: NURSERYMEN’S CONFERENCE WELLINGTON, January 14; The New Zealand Nurserymen’s Conference ’ opened to-day. Delegates were present from all parts of the Dominion. ;'■> / ’
The Hon. W. Nosworthy was present, and briefly reviewed the activities of the horticultural section of the Department bf Agriculture. During the pqst.year 962 nurseries had bebn registered, which, was an increase over the previous twelve months.. The export of friiit last year was a record, and the prices we’re sufficiently good to obviate recourse to the Government guarantee, wh)ch had been renewed for the present season. The Government 1 was prepared to subsidise the Institute of Horticulture to the extent of £l5O on a £1 for £1 basis. ■
