Fire at two o’clock this morning gutted the northern portion of a twostorey modern building occupied by Lloyd, Ltd., drapers, Broadway. The flames had a strong hold when the brigade arrived. The Presbyterian and English churches were threatened, but were saved. The damage is estimated at £lB,OOO. The insurance is £lO,OOO on the stock in the Sun Office. AUCKLAND ZOO AUCKLAND, January 13. A shipment of animals for the Auckland Zoo arrived by the Tekoa from London to-day.. One giant anteater and a chimpanzee died during the voyage, while a second ant-eater is in a dangerous condition. A veterinary surgeon was summoned by wireless while the vessel was approaching the coast, and he attended the sick animal while the steamer was anchored in the stream.

AID FOR SETTLERS. WELLINGTON, Jan. 15.

The Minister of Lands is receiving many requests for relief from Crown and soldier settlers, who suffered by floods. From his personal observations, he is able to say that the great bulk of the damage is not of a permanent nature, but the grazing is wholly or practically ruined for this season. The Land Boards have been directed to make enquiries without delay, and if necessary, to recommend a postponemeht of the payment of .rent.

ESCAPE FROM DROWNING

WELLINGTON, January 13;

Last week-end at Castlecliff, Wanganui, Dr. Alexander Wilson, Mrs. Wilson (daughter of Mr. W. A. Kennedy, of Wellington), and their little son narrowly escaped death by drowning. The family were bathing near the Kiosk. None' could swim. Suddenly the littlb boy was swept off his feet by the'current. 1 Mi’s. Wilson rushed to his assistance, and" she also was swept away. Dr. Wilson, suddenly noticing what had happened, and seeing his wife being carried away, dashed into the water in the hope of being able to' gave her, 1 but he, too, was swept away. All three were now struggling in the’ water, and their cries for hell) brought people’ froin farther along the beach to the rescue. Members of the Surf Club were not on duty, but two of those on the beach, Messrs Smith and Bullock, managed to get Dr. and Mrs. Wilson out of the 1 water just in time. In the meantime the little boy had been carried by the current into shallow water, ’and was brought safely ashore. He t soon recovered; but Dr. and Mrs. Wilson' were unconscious. Two doc- 1 tors, who had been telephoned for, arrived, and after some time. Mrs. Wilson revived after It was, however, only with considerable difficulty that Dry Wilson’s life was saved."-
