REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent),

■REEFTON, Nov. 29. A special meeting of the Inangahua A. and P« Association was held a. Mr G. Pascoe’s office yesterday, Mr A. B. West being voted to the chair. Hie Secretary reported a credit balance °i £2l/9/6. , Mr Noble suggested holding a, show later than Grey r s or Hokitika s, seeing that Canterbury “swept the board” for prizes at Grey last year. This was not an advantage to the local farmer.Mr Noble proposed and Mr Reeves seconded, that the Show be held on March 6 and 7. . Letters were received from ike West Coast A. and P. Association requesting the formation of a separate A. and district comprising Inangahua, Grey, Hokitika, and Westport, for the purpose of representation on the Island Federated Society of A. and P. Associations. Mr West moved and Mr J. Williams seconded, that the Inangahua. A and P. Association fall into line with the West, Coast Association in regard to the matter. —This was carried. The West Coast A. and P. Association drew attention to the proposed allocation of members to the South Is land Federated Society, and suggested a member being allocated to the West Coast Associations. It was decided that the schedule committee of last year be appointed, with power to add to their iiltmbei, and that they be instructed to prepare the schedule and submit same as soon as possible. The Schedule Committee was instructed to confer with the Rotokohu members with regard to the schedule, and that it be a recommendation to the Schedule Committee to form a ladies’ committee. The matter of appointing canvassers was deferred until after the annual meeting, which was fixed for Thursday, December 11. The death occurred at the Reeftoli Hospital of Mrs Goodwin, mother of Mrs Simon Pascoe. Deecased has been a resident of the district for sqpie years, and was 83 years of age. Th® interment will be private at 9 a.m. to-' morrow.

The Golden Coast Dairy Company has landed an air compressor butterpounding machine, at considerable outlay. The expenditure incurred will be more than justified by the increased consumption. One of the largest firms in New Zealand has trebled its order to the factory for pat butter within the last few days, lhe installation of this unit completes the plant and justifies the company s claim to be one of the most up-to-date factories in New Zealand. A meeting was held at the Band Room, Reefton, last night for the purpose of forming a swimming and life saving club. Mr. Merry was voted to the chair. Mr. McNabb was appointed secretary. Mr. Carlyle Atkinson, who was a member of the champion team for New Zealand, said a club of the kind should be established for the purpose of controlling and fostering swimming and life saving in every town. He gave the meeting the benefit of his advice as to organisation, official recognition, and affiliating with' the N.Z. Amateur Swimming Association. The minimum number needed was 20. It was proposed to call a .later meeting and endeavour to place the club on a propel footing. Reefton is certainly favoured for swimming having a line swimming bath and the river has many attractions for those who prefer the sport in running water, so given a little enthusiasm there no reason why the next swimming season should not see the sport firmly established. It is stated in the weekly report of the Scotia Mine that the unwatering o fthe North winze was completed, the necessary 'repairs made to the ladders and the cleaning up of the winze drive was commenced. At mid-day on Tuesday the party exposed the reef, which was nearly live feet from the footwall logs, therefore the reef ,at a depth of 38ft below No. 3 is directly under this level. The reef was sampled and a truck of stone was broken out and sent to the surface. Work underground since the winze was left has been in a crosscut 90ft south of the winze on No. 3. This is now in 6ft and still in stone. No. 2 sample was taken from this point, but the stone had been exposed by firing a shot on the east side of the drive and only a small area of the reef was showing, as the. pump is not being used, the tanks are kept going constantly and the water is kept down to No. 5 Level.
