HOCKEY
FIVE A-SIDE TOURNAMENT.
(Our Own Correspondent.)
REEFTON, October 6.
lire tournament for the White Shield, took place on the Reefton Racecourse on Saturday, commencing at 11 a.m. The day was ideal for play, and the course was fast and dry, remarkably so considering the heavy rain of the two previous days. The management had everything in caiptal order for the day’s sport, and the whole programme was carried out without the slightest hitch. There were good attendances of spectators at both morning and afternoon sessions, and the display of hockey was good indeed’, and there is little doubt that the scientific display of the winners—the Reefton A team — was contributed to by having such a splendid ground to practise on. The visiting teams were made very welcome, and, the utmost good feeling was displayed on all sides, while the officials were assiduous in attending to all the teams. The refereeing, too, came in for favourable- comment, and perhaps the most pleasing feature was the good sportsmanship of the captain of the Blackball team (Miss Matthews) who immediately upon the completion of the final game, was the first to congratulate the opposing captain upon her team’s success. First Round —Blackball beat Reefton 8., 2—l; Greymouth A. beat Cronadun C., 2—o; Blaketown B. beat Greymouth 8., no score, but the ball went over the line; Blaketown A. beat Cronadun 8., no score, ball over the line; Reefton A. beat Black’s Point, 2 —o. The principal feature of this round’was the good fight the Cronadun C. (Midgets) put up against Greymouth A. in the early part of the game, having the older opponents doing their very best, and the wonderful play of little Miss Cutbush, of the uick’s Point team, against Reefton A. This young lady should not be long excluded from representative honours. Second Round —Blackball A. beat Greymouth 8., 2 —o; Greymouth A. beat Cobden A., 3 —o; Reefton A. beat Reefton C., s—o, a very fast game; Blaketown beat Cronadun A., 2 —l, one of the best contests of the tournament, it being anyone’s game right up to call of time. Semi-final—Blackball A. (2) v. Grey A. (I).A very even display, Grey being somewhat unlucky. Reefton A. v. Blaketown, 4—o. The older Reefton players showed a lovely passing game, from which Miss Taaffe shot four goals.
Final—Reefton A. (2) beat Blackball B. (0). A good game was expected, but from practically the bully-off Reefton showed superior combination. Miss Lockington invaded and sent a pass to Miss Taaffe, who shot an excellent goal. Then Miss Stubbs for Blackball attacked strongly, but Miss Lockington saved grandly. In the second spell Miss Osbourne dribbled ‘through and, beating her opponents, shot a goal. The next score was got by Miss Wilson, who by clever play evaded the Blackball backs and shot the third goal, and play ceased near the centre.
In the interval before the final, the Cronadun girls played the referees, but the men proved the better, winning by two goals to nil. In the evening the visitors were entertained at a dance at the Theatre Royal, where tlie shield was presented to the winning team (Reefton Ladies A.) by the President of the Hockey Association, Mr Cyril Heaphy, of Greymouth, who congratulated them upon winning it for the second time in succession. He also commented upon the extremely fine play of the winners and congratulated' the promoters upon the excellent management of the tournament, which it had been a pleasure to attend. DUNOLLIE TOURNAMENT. The hockey six-a-side tournament will take place at Dunollie on Saturday, October 18. In the evening a romplimentary ball will be held in the Miners’ Hall.
