SPORTING

NEW ZEALANDERS AT RANDWICK

NIGGER MINSTREL DOES WELL.

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.)

SYDNEY, September 16. Ballymena has been scratched' for the Rosehill Cup. Glentruin has been scratched for the Camelia Stakes. Nigger Minstrel, with Ashley Reed in the saddle, did a clattering gallop on the Randwick middle grass track. The first three furlongs took 36 3-4 secs., five furlongs 1.3, seven furlongs 1.29£, and the mile 1.43. Gloaming, who got a slight knock on the hind leg on Saturday, was bandaged to-day, and did steady work on the tan.

Glentruin and The Cypher were on the easy list.

RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES

YESTERDAY’S WORK.

(Special to “Star.”)

CHRISTCHURCH, September 16. A very cold easterly wind was in evidence during training hour’s this morning. The No. 6 grass track provided a fast galloping ground, but the wind, which came in gusts, was against fast times. When at its worst, Starmist covered six furlongs in 1.17 1-5; She finished badly, taking 40 l-ssecs for the last three furlongs. Lava and Giantkiller were companions over five furlongs, run in 1.4. Dame Straitlace occupied 1.18 2-5 over six furlongs, going well all the way. Fresco took 1.22 3-5 to- cover six furlongs, but was going very easily. Winkie’s Best got a break on Boaaicea in . the early stages of a half-mile sprint, and beat her home comfortably in 51 2-ssecs. Prince Ferouz and Count Cavour kept close company most of the way in a spin over six furlongs, but the former was drawing away at the finish after doing 1.16 for’the journey. Lucinette, with Kilcannich as a mate for the last five furlongs,' covered seven furlongs in 1.29 4-5. Tarleton ran .six furlongs m 1.17 1-5, finishing exceptionally well after going at an even pace all the way. Te Anau Lad reeled off five furlongs in 1.2, doing it easily. It was a very attractive gallop as he carried a big weight. Deucalion was much too good for Escarpment at the end of six furlongs, ran in 1.16 4-5. Palestrina and Tresham covered six furlongs nicely in 1.16. with Palestrina holding her mate at the finish. Kukume was going better than Chickwheat at the end of six furlongs, run in 1.16 1-5. Cerberus galloped seven furlongs, by himself, putting plenty of dash into his task. Footfall ran six furlongs in 1.18 3-5, starting off slowly but showing improved pace over the second half of the journey. Radiac and Relic were together. at the end of five furlongs, which occupied 1.5 1-5. Carpentier went with them for the first part. Limelight was given a useful gallop over a mile, Tiff following over the same ground in slightly better time.

Pilliewinkie was given an easy circuit. finishing up with three furlongs in 38 2-ssecs. Moorland was going comfortably alongside Last Dart and Ouhiv at the end of six furlongs- run in 1.17. Bonito, assisted over the last halfmile by His Majesty, showed great dash while running six furlongs in 1.15 4-5. RACING NEWS AND NOTES. (By “Arlington.”) The Dannevirke Hunt’s Club’s Annual Meeting will be held to-morrow. Suspicion should ■ run well in the Oringi Hack Hurdles to-morrow. Ah Fu reads as well as anything else engaged in the Hunt Club Steeplechase at Dannevirke. .On Friday and Saturday there will be racing at Ashburton, and on Saturday the Avondale and Otaki Maori Clubs commence their meetings. In Sydney on Saturday the Rosehill Club’s fixture will mark one step nearer the big A. J.C. Meeting. Royal Divorce, who it will be remembered failed so badly at Marton the previous week, was not asked to gallcY) to win the Eclipse Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday. He was admirably handled by R. Reed, who gained any number of lengths by sending his mount through on the rails at the turn. At the same time the English horse could have come on the outside, and won just as easily. On this show ing he is a likely winner of some good handicaps this season. Lady Cavendish registered a good performance in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui Slow to move, she still had a great deal of leeway to make up at the turn, but, lying down to her work in great style, was galloping over everything at the finish. She is not an attractive-looking filly by any means, but has the family gift of galloping. She is by Absurd from Bonnie Portland. Siaosi was very lucky to win the Sirring Hack Handicap at Wanganui. There was a melee soon after the start, when Lady Merriwee fell, Papaponga lost his rider, and Ruby Ring was badly interfered with. The lastnamed, who finished close up fourth, could not have been beaten with an even dispatch. New Zealand-owned horses have a great record in the Chelmsford Stakes, the race in which Gloaming was beaten by Heroic on Saturday. In 1911 R. D. O’Donnell, now training at Trentham, won with Los Angelos, who carried a 71b. penalty and beat a strong field. In 1916 Mr. W. G. Stead scored an unexpected victorv with the three-year-old Sasanof. Two years later Gloaming made his first appearance in this event, in which he made his opponents look like cheap horses. He competed again two years ago, when Beauford beat him, that being the first of four races in which the cracks met, their final score being two all. Last year Rapine carried the colours of Mr. A. B. Williams into first place. The Hon. E. W. Alison has named his two-year-olds, having claimed Oration for the Ciceroi—Elsie Hart colt, and Air Queen for the Flying King--Vangn filly. Mr. E. Alison has claimed Appellant for his Westcourt —Wolaroi Lass colt.

S. Hodge, who is training Mr. T. H. Lowry's horses while G. Jones is away in Sydney with Nigger Minstrel, has arrived at Ellerslie with Phoenix Park and Orenm. The latter is a- two-year-old filly by King John from Desert Gold, and is engaged in the Avondale Stakes. >.
