In the Assembly, Mr Gillies, 'Secretary of Agriculture and Stock, stated that the yearly income from the sale of opossum skins from 1917 to 1923 amounted to £300,000. It was proposed to charge a royalty of a penny a skin. This source of wealth was practically equal to the gold yield.
