WATERLOO WILDS
i ■ —: ALDERMEN WANT ESCORTS Some .of the aidermen at Waterloo Sydney, are afraid to go home in the dark.' . At a recent meeting of the council one aiderman, in protesting against the late hour at which the meetings‘finished, complained that it was dangerous to walk through the streets at that hour of the night.
The question was referred to again at a later meeting, when the Mayor, Aiderman Connolly, suggested that a policeman should be obtained to escort each aiderman home after the council meeting. Aiderman Mulcahy, however, objected to statements detrimental to the community being made. The Mayor: At the last meeting several statements were made about aidermen being afraid to go home; I think some of the statements were overdone. I have never been held up by a mob, and the district should not be belittled. If some of the aidermen are afraid in their own districts, then they should get out of it. Alderman Stewart said the police were to blame for a lot of assault and robbery cases. “We used to see policemen on their beats,” he said, “now we never see one. None ever come near our dark alleys and byways now.”
