TIPHEAD PERILS

PITFALLS FOR THE UNWARY.

Wreck-ryjrs, seascape painters romantic youth—beware ' The warning note was sounded by Mr J. McLean at last night’s meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board. True there have always been perils of such pitfalls as breach of promise actions, but ail who come under the categories enumerated above are to learn that more immediate and prosaic traps lie in the paths along the breakwaters. What Mr McLean pointed out was that there are holes along the stringers on the north breakwater that constitute a constant source of danger. Trouble had been experienced .during the rescue work at the stranding of the Ngahere, he said, and he thought attention should be given to the matter. If there was another wreck—“Oh Goodness!” interrupted Mr W. Leitch. “Don’t say that!” (Laughter).

Mr McLean moved that the engineer be asked to report on the matter. The Engineer (Mr J. W. Gillies) said that the state of the south breakwater was just as bad, and the need of work was much more urgent there. He asked if it were intended to include the south breakwater in the report. “Certainly,” said Mr McLean.

The Chairman (Mr J. Steer) said that the Engineer could report bn the breakwaters as such, but nothing could be done until after the report of the engineering experts on the harbour had come to hand. Mr McLean’s motion was carried.
