The- death occurred this morning (telegraphed our Hokitika correspondent) of Miss Katherine (Kitty) Helen Duff, after a lengthy illness, deceased was a native of Hokitika, and 61 years of age. ■ A Washington cablegram stated that Calvin Coolidge, the President’s son, has died, at the age of 17. He received, a week ago, a small blister on the heel, when playing tennis. Septic poisoning developed, and he quicldly became dangerously ill. Physicians operated on Saturday, slitting the left leg to the bone, and inserting drains to carry off the poison. The boy’s vitality sustained him through the day, but inability to take nourishment for the. past 60 hours, induced a succession of sinking spells-, whence he was unable to rally.

The death took place at Christchurch of Richard Straight, one of the earliest residents of Kumara. He. followed mining' pursuits, but for the past 14 years had been . in poor health. He left Kumara, with his wife, a few years ago, and resided for a whille at Waiuta, later going to his daughter in Christchurch. He leaves a widow and family of six sons, Richard, Charles, Alex, Samuel, Thomas, and William, and eight daughters, Mesdamcs E. Steel 1 (Goldsborough), T. Richardson (Karam/a), V. Pearce (Broken Hill), J.. Blight (Mananui), C. Cruse (Papanui), and Misses Myrtle (Kumara), and Jennie (Karamea).
