FOR SMALL VESSELS
SLIPWAY ON WEST COAST.
Asked to report upon the advisability of the construction of a slipway for small vessels, Mr J. D. Gillies, Engineer to the Greymouth Harbour. Board, reported at last evening’s meeting of the Board that the question had been undei; consideration at various times, both by the Greymouth and Westport Harbour Boards, but beyond providing tidal gridirons at both ports, nothing further had been done. The provision of a patent slip capable of handling vessels of the dimension of the Eileen Ward (the largest local vessel) was a matter worth considering. Such a slip would handle not only the Harbour Board’s fleet of both Grey . anti Westport, but would be utilised by the medium class of ■ vessels frequenting the port. The cost of such a slipway would largely depend on the site, and this again would depenci on the proposals for harbour improvement, which would shortly be submitted by the Engineering Commission. If the Board considered the idea worth following up, he suggested that after the engineers’ report was to hand, and a decision come to regarding future harbour improvements, a detailed report should be furnished by the Secretary and? himself, shewing the cost and probable revenue of a slip to handle vessels up to 200 ft in length and 15ft in depth. On the motion of the Chairman, the report was adopted, and the matter held over until the - report of the .Commission should come to hand.
