VALEDICTORY
MR A. H. PATERSON.
Professionally an socially, Mr A. H. Paterson has made himself very popular during his stay, in Greymouth, and the news of his- decision to leave for Christchurch occasioned considerable regret. Some of this was expressed at St. John’s Presbyterian Sunday School Hall last evening, when the young people of the church gave a farewell social in his honour. There was a large attendance, and the evening passed pleasantly with musical items and games. On behalf of the young people, Mr Bruerton asked Mr Paterson to accept, as a mark of their love and esteem, a Bible and a- wallet, and, on behalf of the Junior Bible Class, of which Mr Paterson > was leader, an autograph album. Mr Bruerton expressed the regret generally felt at Mr Paterson’s departure. He had been of very great assistance to the young people, and had associated himself with them in every way. Rev. T. N. Cuttie, on behalf of the office-bearers of the church, presented Mr Paterson with a set of military brushes. In doing so, Mr Cuttie said tfiat they were very .sorry to lose Mr Paterson, who had been a very faithful church worker, having served in the positions of secretary of the Management Committee, the Flower Show Committee, and the Envelope Committee. They would find it hard to fill his place, but felt that a young man of his ability was doing the right thing in seeking wider fields and greater opportunities. They hoped that, some day, he would rise to the top of the legal profession, as he was a man of integrity and sincerity, as well as intellectual ability. Replying in ,his usual humorous style, Mr Paterson returned thanks for the gifts, and said he assumed that the esteem came from the young men and the love from the ladies! Referring to the church work, •he said that his association with it had / been very pleasant. He had derived a good deal of enjoyment and benefit from it, and it was very satisfactory to know that his work had been appreciated. Mr Paterson will leave for Christchurch by to-mororw’s express.
