HOKITIKA NOTES

‘Own Corre«pondent.) HOKITIKA, Feb. 9. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor, (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. Coulson, Jas. King, D. J. Evans, W. Jeffries, W. D. Mac Kay, J. Lloyd, G. Heinz. The Department of Health wrote complaining that no reply had been received respecting improvement to premises; also stating that the Council’s reply re the sewerage system, was very unsatisfactory and stating that it would be placed before the 'Health Department with a view to having a compulsory clause in the Act. The Mayor suggested that a report be received with the object of declaring a sewerage area that part of the town bordered by Fitzgerald Street. The Health Officer appeared unsympathetic. Cr. Evans considered the letter discourteous. He thought the Borough should place its position before the Minister of Health, and if possible get the Minister to visit the place and see the difficulties. The Mayor said that all objected to the autocratic dictatorial tone of the officer. He admitted he couldn’t see a way out of the difficulty whatever. He (the Mayor) could not see how the Department could force the Council to do anything. The poll of the ratepayers must be taken to find the money.

Cr. Jeffries moved that the letter be received and consideration be deferred till Cr. Coulson has interviewed the Minister in Wellington.—■ Carried.
