REEFTON NOTES

(Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, lanuary 30The installation of a weighbridge at Reefton Railway Station has been commenced. The wonder is that such a convenience has not been installed before, considering that during each month some thousands of tons of coal have been exported from Reefton to Canterbury. The local Courthouse is being repaired and renovated by Mr J. B. McMyn. Tenders for painting the building are being called. Scaffolding has been erected at the Post Office to allow of it being replastered without danger in several places and repairs taken in hand at once will doubtless result in a saving of money. The weather which has been fearfully hot in the district for some time past, broke last night and some splendid showers of rain fell, in fact for a couple of hours rain fell solidly. Pastures were in need of water, which the land lias now received. The pushing on of the lowest level in the Wealth of Nations mine is being carried out with expedition, about 40 men being now engaged at the mine. It is expected that the reef will be got in about a week when, a connection will be made with the

level above which will allow of better ventilation. When this is completed sufficient stone should be got for the battery to pay all working expenses.
