The New Zealand swimming championship contests were continued tonight in fine weather before a large attendance. Results: — 100 yards Intermediate Boys Breaststroke Championship.—G. Boyd (Wanganui) 1, T. V. McTigue (Canterbury) 2, B. Rowson (Wanganui) 3.' Boyd led all the way, winning by three yards; Rowson a similar distance away- Time, 1.23 3-5. 220 yards Inter-Club Handicap.— First Heat: W, T. Smith (Auckland) (2secs) 1, W. D. P- Lindsay (South Canterbury) (scr) 2? Fairgray (Auckland) (2secs) also swam', but was disqualified for starting before time. Time, 2.45 3-5. Second heat: V. C. Stockley (Auckland) (14secs) 1» A. Adamson (Hawkes Bay) (9secs) 2. Also started. P. Dickson (Wanganui) ((Isec). Time 2.55 3-5. Third heat: A. Dalton (Canterbury) (15secs) 1, J. Moorehouse (Canterbury) (15secs) 2. Also started: L. Dawkins (Wanganui) (Isec), W. Sutherland (Canterbury) (20secs), A. Bagget (Wanganui) (22 secs). Time, 2.56 2-5. 100 yards Intermediate Girls Championship final.—M. Jepson (Otago) Ist; P. Page (Auckland) and M. J. Bell (Auckland) a dead heat 2. Miss Jepson was first to show out, and then led to the finish, winning by a couple of feet from Miss Page and Miss Bell who touched simultaneously. Time, 72 4-5. 1220 yards Breaststroke Champronship final.—C. Herd (Canterbury) 1, C. Lewis (Otago) 2, F. E. Bolton (Wanganui) 3. Also started: A. Clar•idge (Wellington). When 100 yards were covered Herd was leading Bolton by two yards, with the other handy. At 160 yards Herd increased his lead to four yards from Bolton and Lewis. Claridge stopped. Herd went on to win by six yards, Lewis beating Bolton by a yard for second place. Time, 3min 4 4-ssec., a New Zealand recoi d. 440 yards Ladies’ Championship. G. Shand (Canterbury) 1, E. Stockley (Auckland) 2, B. Fisher (Canterbury) 3. Also started: M. D. Welsh (Canterbury). Miss Shand led from the start, and the race quickly resolved into a procession. Miss Shand finally won by 15 yards, with Miss Fisher a yard away. The time was 6.28 l-o. 50 yards Inter-Club Handicap, under 17 years.—Boyd (Wanganui) ssec 1, Simes (Canterbury) 2secs 2; . Westbrook (Wanganui) Isec 3. Time, 34 2-ssecs. 100 yards Junior Girls’ Championship __l. Coutts (Auckland) 1, D. Magee (Auckland) 2, L. Boadhead (Wanganui) 3. Also started: J. Clarkson (Hawkes Bay). Miss Coutts beat Miss Magee by a couple of feet. Miss Broadhead was 10 yards away. Time, 80 3-5. 440“ yards Junior Boys’ Championship.—J. Bridson (Auckland) 1, W. Cameron (Canterbury) 2, L. Fitch (Wellington) 3. Also started: G. Malcolmson (Canterbury). Bridson and Cameron went to the front, and kept together for half the distance, when Bridson drew away, finally winning by ten yards. Fitch was 45 yards away third. Time, 6.35 2-5. 220 yards Inter-Club Handicap final —V. Stockley (Auckland) 1, W. Smith (Auckland) 2, D. P.' Lindsay (South Canterbury) 3. .Won.by a touch. Time, 2.51 2-5. 880 yards Championship. —Atkinson. (Canterbury) 1, L. Hill (Canterbury) 2, E. Bradley (Auckland) 3. The only starters. At 100 yards Atkinson led his opponents by a yard, but from this point continued to draw away. When half the distance was covered Atkinson had a lead of 25 yards from Hill, with Bradley five yards away. Atkinson continued to increase his lead, and finally won by 32 yards, Hill defeating Bradley for second place by 15 yards. Time 12.22 3-5. Polo. —Canterbury and Wellington drew each two goals.
BORG’S NEW RECORD. (Ausiralun and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, January 30. The swimming hundred yards test race to provide Borg with the opportunity of meeting the local sprint champions, and to assist in the choice of a sprint representative for the championships in Melbourne, resulted in Borg and. Herald dead heating, with Carbery third; time, fifty-five secs.' In an exhibition five hundred metres race Charlton established an Australasian record of 6.46. The State, mile championship resulted : Borg 1; Christie 2, with Springfield (Queensland) and Huntly dead heat for third. Borg led all the way and won by 120 yards or one l a PTime 22 min. 23 secs., a world’s record. LATER. Arne Borg in the course of the mile race established new Australian figures for various stages of the journey. He covered 550 yards in 6/531, a thousand metres in 14/7, and threequarters of a mile in 16/57. LOCAL RACE HANDICAPS. An unusual coincidence took place when the. Hokitika and Greymouth Swimming Clubs, holding a meeting on Tuesday evening, decided that the date of the annual carnival be Wednesday, February 13 . The Hokitika Club has sportingly consented to rearrange its date ; as February 13 is the only date on which the tides would suit the Greymouth dub.
