Houses are being rushed up in large numbers at Wembley, and in many cases sold for from £BOO to £2OOO according to size, as soon as the foundations are laid. BRUTAL DEED PUNISHED LONDON, December 9. , John Whalley, of Accrington, was . sentenced to penal servitude for life , for having chopped off both hands , of his five-year-old step-daughter, in order to revenge himself upon liis vfife. Six thousand pouni’/s was raised by public subscription for the mutilated child. CANTON CUSTOMS. HONGKONG, December 8. Naval circles emphatically deny the landing of marines in Canton. The British and French admirals paid a brief visit to Canton, but whether they saw Sun Yat Sen is not disclosed. The latter certainly is unlikely to carry out the threat to annex the Customs buildings, in the presence of an international flotilla of nine gunboats.
NEW SWIMMING RECORDS. ' NEW YORK, December 8. At Chicago, four world’s swimming records were broken in inter-scholastic contests. Johnny Weismuller, using the Australian crawl, swam 100 metres in 58 3-ssec, achieving his fiftieth world’s record. Peggy Williamson swam 200 yards, breast stroke, in lmin 55 4-ssecs. Sybil Bauer swam 100 metres, back stroke, in 80 3-ssbcs. John Early swam 100 yards, breast stroke, in 69 3-ssecs* TREVESSA VERDICT. LONDON, December 8. The Board of Trade enquiry into tiie loss of the Trevessa. resulted in the finding that the ship sank through springing a leak, but there was no evidence to justify any positive finding with regard to the cause. The Court did not consider ‘ any individual blameworthy. The boats were properly equipped, and fine seamanship was displayed by the officers and the crew. ' ■ b-.ii" ■ HERTZGG’S OUTBURST. CAPETOWN, December 9. Speaking at Smithfield, General Hertzog bitterly attacked Premier Smuts in connection with his speeches
on the European situation, and said that the Premier’s policy tended to provoke another European war, which was plainly impending. It was quite dear that Premier Smuts was willing to allow South Africa to participate. Hertzog warned his supporters to be frugal, and pay their debts, so that there would be money for food when the war came.
