HOKITIKA NOTES

(Own Correspondent.) HOKITIkJ December 10. Kanieri was visited by a severe hailstorm on Friday night while at the same time, bright starlight was being experienced in Hokitika. Residents in Kanieri expecting their friends to return from town drenched to the skin were surprised to see them come home not only dry, but without any knowledge of a deluge. Each train from the east brings exhibitors, and visitors to the Exhibition. The enquiry bureau is already busy finding accommodation for those arriving and enquirers. This is going to be a very live branch. The Hokitika Municipal Band played a programnfe at the AVestland Hospital yesterday afternoon under the baton of Mr. C. B. Ross. Being an j ideal day, several of the patients were, enabled to be brought outside to hear the music. The baridt-was entertained at afternoon tea by Matron Hamilton and staff. Mr Ross thanked the Matron and staff for their hospitality, the Matron responding. The Exhibition Choir had a try-out in the Exhibition Building yesterday afternoon. The choir, under Mr W. Perry, is making good progress. There are about 65 voices. ' It is generally admitted that the ordinary push-bike is intended to carry but one person, except, of course, “bicycles made for two,” to use the title of an old humorous ditty. Two men—their combined weight must have been about 24 stone —came to grief in Stafford Street a few days ago when the front wheel struck a small obstacle resulting in the forks breaking. Both riders received a bad shaking; one was so badly cut near the left eve that he had to receive the attention of a surgeon. A start has been made to put in the railway siding up the river bank for the- use of sawmillers.
