HOKITIKA

(From Our Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, December 8. The ordinary meeting of the Hokitika Harbour Board was held last evening. Present: Messrs G. A. AA r ood (chairman), C. J. Nightingale, T. AV. Bruce, M. H. Houtson. The Shipwreck Relief Society wrote asking for donation towards funds.— £1 donated. The Kokatahi Sawmill Co., The Diggers, and Kanieri Sawmill Co. wrote applying for skid space between Brittan and Rolleston streets.—Resolved that the request be granted at a rental of £24 per annum. The Hajbourriiaster reported that

there was plenty of water on the bar, the Chairman remarking that there was about 14ft. Accounts amounting to £63 7s lid were passed for payment. The action of the Chairman in leasing the Board’s boiler at £1 per week was approved. It was resolved that permission be granted to the Exhibition Council to store empty cases in the HarbourBoard shed without liability at a charge of £4 for the Exhibition period. It was lesolved that the Board make a donation of £4 to the Exhibition Committee. The staff at the State School solved the problem this week of how to raise funds for school prizes. A “Fair” was organised and held on Wednesday atfernoon. This proved a great success, about £6O being taken. The Hokitika Scouts gave one of their entertainments in All Saints Schoolroom to a fair and appreciative audience. Sandwiched in with exhibitions of Scout work by juniors and seniors were humorous sketches by the lad., such as “One good turn deserves another,” depicting Indian gratitude; “The Babes in the Wood,” and finally the .sketch “Jane” by the South Spit patrol. The small boys in the front — prospective cubs and scouts —kept up a continuous hubbub of approval. The entertainment concluded with the singing of a verse of the National Anthem.. Prosecutions, under the motor bylaws of the Westland County commenced yesterday, when two convictions were recorded and fines of £1 and 28s costs" were inbicted. A similar conviction and fine wa.s given for the Public Works Department against a Ilari Hari motor lorry proprietor.
