“GET SOME WORK”
MORE VAGRANCY CHARGES Each week lately has found the Magistrate’s Court occupied with charges of vagrancy. To-day, as the result of a constable’s investigations in the Railway Locomotive Sheds last night John Blondquist and George Regan, both men well over middle age, appeared before Mr. W. Meldrum, S.M., and admitted charges of being rogues and vagabonds in that they were found by night without lawful excuse in enclosed premises. Both men, according to Senr.Sergeant P. J. McCarthy, had been drinking, and Regan, who trembled violently, appeared to have suffered somewhat from his bout. He said he had a job carpentering at Otira, and was the possessor of £4O when he arrived in Greymouth. “And you spent it all?” asked the Magistrate. Accused admitted that he had. “It hasn’t done you much good!” added the Magistrate, as he scruintised the 1 shivering form. Regan said he had work to go to, and pulled out a quantity of silver out of his pocket to demonstrate that he could carry on until he got work. Blondquist said he could find work at the mines. “Do you think this man is fit to work?” asked the Magistrate pointing to Regan. “I think so,” said Senior-Sergt. McCarthy. “He’ll be all right if he does not drink.” “Well leaye the town to-day and get some work!” ordered the Magistrate. “I will adjourn the cases until Monday. If you are arrested again, you will be sentenced on these charges.”
