Herbert Symes, clerk to Pohangnia •County Council, ,was arrested to-day on a charge that on or about May 23, 1923, he did steal £lOO th® property of the Council. He appeared in the police court this afternoon, and was remanded till Friday next, bail being granted, self in £3OO, and two sureties of £l5O. WELLINGTON, TELESCOPE WELLINGTON, Nov. 10. A deputation recently urged the City Council to purchase a large telescope at Meanee College, formerly used by Dr. Kennedy. It is under offer at £5OO and the deputation was unanimous to secure it for Kelburn Observatory. The City Council decided yesterday to buy at the price mentioned, the telescope to remain the City’s property for all time. Whether it will be placed at Kelburn, or on some other site, is not yet settled. CAR, IN CREEK. DANNEVIRKE, November 9. A mail contractor’s car, driven by Patrick Green, when going to a Coast district, crashed into the hand rail of a bridge three miles from Dannevirke, and fell into a creek. Green was pinned underneath, but was rescued by a passerby, and is now in Dannevirke Hospital with severe internal injuries. J. Kevany, the only passenger, escaped with minor injuries, but is now in the hospital with shock. MOTORIST TO PAY. DUNEDIN, November 9. At the Supreme Court to-day, Keith Gough, by his guardian, Joseph Gough, sued Ernest Edward Booth for£4o4 ss, damages sustained by plaintiff in a collision with a motor car, plaintiff being the rider of a bicycle at the time of the accident. A jury of four returned a verdict for £157 15s 6d, and judgment was given accordingly.

ELLESMERE CONSTITUENCY. CHRISTCHURCH, November 9. In response to an invitation from a deputation representing Reform voters in the Ellesmere district, Mr David Jones (Chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board) has agreed to contest the Ellesmere seat at the next general election. ’Hie request was made because the sitting Member, Sir Heaton Rhodes, will not be a candidate at the next election. In agreeing to contest the seat Mr Jones said that at the last election he had (hot been defeated by mny© party, but by a combination of Liberal and Labour Parties. He could easily have beaten any party in the Kaiapoi electorate. R.ADIUM PURCHASE. WELLINGTON, November 10. At a meeting of the Radium Appeal Committee last evening, the Mayor and Chairman of the Hospital Board both denied the rumour that a contract had been made to buy radium from a certain company at over value. They said that they were not bound to any seller, and that no price would be accepted except under the best advice, and that inquiries were being made overseas through the Government, in order to test the market. The committee decided to rebut any such rumour as being harmful to the collection of radium subscriptions, and as being unjustified.

One member stated tht raduim could be bought in parts of Europe at a lower price than that quoted by Hie company referred to, but such radium lasted only about six years.
