CHRISTCHURCH, November 8. The attendance for the second day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Spring Meeting was again large, while the going was good. —Whiteleigh Handicap—

Dillon S., Amboyna Wood and Bay Boy were the best backed in the W’hiteleigh Handicap. Fairton led Dillon S., Okuti and Mushroom for five furlongs, when Okuti joined Fairton in the lead. Starting on the last lap Okuti was in front, with Fairton, Welcome Beta and Peter the First next, while Mat Patch was moving up fast. Mat Patch joined Okuti half a mile from home, and a little further on he was out in front. Mat Patch led into the straight and won by two lengths from Peter the first, who beat Okuti by two lengths. Colonel Havelock was half a length away, a neck in front of Mushroom.

—Favourite Prevails —

The favourite, Tommy Direct, prevailed in the Railway Handicap, in which Nellie Scott, Phil Smith and Lear Dillon who well backed. Glen Mavis led. Rorke’s Drift, The Rook and Tommy Direct for half a mile, when Tommy Direct moved up and showed out in front. Tommy Direct turned for home well clear of Rorke’s Drift, Glen Mavis and Phil Smith, and won by two lengths from Rorke’s Drift, with Lear Dillon finishing fast two lengths away, z and The Rook fourth.

—Courtenay Handicap—

Grand Denver, Loganwood, Taraire, Wild Thyme, Stockade, and Paul Dufault were backed in that order for the Courtenay Handicap. Star Queen started faster than the other limit horses, and at the stand she was just clear of Wild Thyme, while Dixie Mac had lost her place by breaking. Racing along the back stretch Star Queen had as her nearest attendants Wild Thyme, Loganwood, Ouimet, Adair and Grand Denver. So they continued all through the first mile, at the end of Ahich Paul Dufault had joined the second division. Half a mile from home, otar Queen gave place to Wild Thyme and Paul Dufault was in fourth place. Easily holding his advantage in the run to the post, Wild Thyme won by four lengths from Paul Dufault, who Finished on well enough to head Taraire off for second money by a length. The next to finish were Albert Cling and Star Queen. —November Handicap— The public made Ahuriri favourite for the November Handicap, with Locanda Mac and Coldwater their next selection. Copa de Oro Junior, Fashion Queen and Ahuriri went off badly. Locanda Mac was the first to show out, and at the end of a furlong he had Irvar and Coldwater as his nearest attendants, with Oratorio some distance back. Passing the stand the order was still the same, with Fashion Queen and Ahuriri closing up. After going six furlongs Locanda Mac was two lengths in front of Oratorio and Irvar. Passing the mile post Oratorio ran up to Locanda Mac, but he broke when starting on the last lap and never settled down again. This left Locanda Mac with a good lead from Coldwater, Ahuriri and Irvar. For the rest of the journey Locanda Mac was never troubled and won easing up by three lengths from Coldwater, with Irvar six lengths away and Ahuriri fourth.

—Free-for-All—

Happy Voyage went out favourite for the Free-for-All, Logan Chief and Great Hope being next in favour. The field went off at the first attempt, Vilo being the first to show out, closely followed by Great Hope, with Happy Voyage next and Logan Chief last. At the end of two furlongs the field was running at two length intervals, the only difference in the order being that Logan Chief had headed Trix Pointer. Turning into the back stretch Logan Chief moved up fast, joining Happy Voyage, about two lengths behind Vilo and Great Hope, who were together. Great Hope and Vilo were still showing the way at the entrance to the straight, where Logan Chief made his effort on the outside. Taking the lead 100 yards from home Logan Chief won by a length from Great Hope, who beat Happy Voyage by a head, with Onyx next.

—Sockburn Handicap —

In the Sockburn Handicap Worthy Bingen, Clonmel, Marietta and Red Oak were backed in that order. Going down the back stretch Whisht put in a fast run, and three furlongs from home he joined Clonmel, who was in the lead. A furlong further on Whisht was out by himself, and he won easily by three lengths from Clonmel, who beat Man

vin Junior by a neck, with Lee Norris half a length away.

—Royal Handicap—

The Royal Handicap, the last race of the day, went to a favourite in Acron. Lady Joan, Don Wild and Alto Chimes were also well supported. Gleaming led into the straight and a great finish resulted in Acron winning by a neck from Don Wild, who bear Gleaming by a head.

SPECIAL COMMENTS.

LOGAN’S CHIEF’S GOOD FORM.

(Special to “Star.”)

CHRISTCHURCH, November 8. The Courenay Handicap attracted a field of thirteen, all the acceptors going to the post. Grand Denver, Loganwood. Taraire, Stockade and Paul Dufault were backed in that order.

The race was full of interest and after being well placed throughout Wild Thyme won comfortably from Paul Dufault and Taraire.

The winner is a six-year-old horse by Wildwood Junior, a dual winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup, from Lily F., by Franz from Lily K., by Huon. He was bred by A. Pringle, and is owned by the South Canterbury sportsman T. H. Ivey, who has several horses in training. Paul Dufault finished second. He was driven by Dave Bennett, who got the best results from the Harold Dillon gelding. From 84 yards behind, Taraire paced a fine race from start to finish. He showed a rare turn of speed and finished up his task in 4.26 4-5, and from post to post private watches made his time considerably better than that. Albert Cling outstayed Star Queen and Loganwood and finished fourth, while the favourite (Grand Denver) gave a poor display and finished a long way behind the leaders. Adair did not look ready for a hard run race, while Dixie Mac broke up in the early stages, and Ouimet and Stockade refused to strike a gait at the start and took no part in the race. The six acceptors started in the Free-for-All, Happy Voyage being favourite with Logan Chief, Great Hope, Onyx, Vilo and Trix Pointer backed in that order. At the stand Great Hope and Vilo led from Happy Voyage, Trix Pointer, Logan Chief and Onyx. In the back straight Logan Chief made a forward move and, maintaining a solid pace went on to win amidst great excitement by a length from Great Hope, with Happy Voyage, Onyx, Vilo and Trix Pointer finishing in that order.

Logan Chief is a four-year-old gelding by the imported sire Logan Pointer, from Regina, and he must be-re-garded as one of the best of his age.

Great Hope, winner of the New Zeaalnd Trotting Cup, finished second after being in a £ood position throughout, and he was unfortunate in meeting such a good one as the winner. Happy Voyage was well placed until the home straight was reached, when he was racing close to the rails. In the final stages he endeavoured to come out, but was blocked and the best he could do was to finish third.

Onyx, who was fourth, did not race as well as was expected, and was probably feeling the effects of her effort in the Cup.
