MARINER'S PROPERTY
■ t CHARGE OF CONSPIRACY. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association) / SYDNEY, Nov. 7. In the Warren conspiracy case, i Captain Warren denied that C. E. [ Jones was his nephew, or that he ever > authorised him to pass as such, or to • purchase property for him. He also denied the signatures on various - documents relating to the purchase ' of the property were his. He admitted 1 the signatures on a number of blank cheques were his, but said he had no recollection of signing them. His memory was good until after he met Jones. It afterwards began to fail. He could not explain the cause of J. T. Jones’s statement from the dock when he said that he managed all Warren’s affairs under power of attorney, and that he was being blamed for a bad property deal which was no
fault of his. C. E. Jones, in a statement from the dock, said that J. T. Jones was his cousin, and induced him to represent himself as Warren’s nephew. Witness obliged, as it seemed to lie impersonation, but his cousin said it was all right, and that he had the advice of two solicitors. SYDNEY, November 8. 'l'he jury found both the Joneses guilty, but recommended Charles to mercy, on account of his previous good character. James was sentenced to eighteen months’ hard labour, and Charles tc nine. His sentence was suspended, and he was bound over in one surety of £4O. The Judge remarked thta he recognised Charles was influenced by James.
