TEA-ROOMS AWARD

FULL AGREEMENT REACHED

A full agreement was reached yesterday in the Hotel and Restaurant Workers’ Dispute, which was heard before Mr. W. Newton, Conciliation Commissioner. The assessors were: For the employers, Messrs G. R. Harker, D. J. Evans, and T. Slee, with Mr. B. L. Hammond as agent; for the Union, Messrs R. A. Brooks and J. Goodall. A long discussion ensued on the wages clauses, but late in the afternoon the following weekly rates, which are on the basis of the Christchurch Ten Mile Radius Award, were agreed upon:— Waiter, £2 17s; Head waitress (if three or more waitresses are employed), £1 17s 6d; others, £1 12s Gd; housemaid-waitress, £1 12s 6d; housemaid, £1 12s 6d; pantryman, £2 2s 6d; pantrymaid, £1 12s Gd; bar attendants, and counter-hands or dispensers in marble bars, (male) £2 17s, (female) £1 12s 6d; shopassistants in pastrycook shops, head assistant, £1 17s 6d; others, £1 15s; laundresses, £1 12s 6d; linenmaids, £1 12s 6d; general hands, £2 2s 6d. One of the issues involved was whether racing clubs should be made parties to the award, the union having cited them for this purpose. After the wages had been agreed upon, the union assessors consented to drop the claim for the currency of the award, which will date from the time of the Arbitration Court’s confirmation until December 31, 1924. No agreement was reached in the Private Hotel Employees’ dispute, which was referred entirely to the Court.
