HEAVY TRAFFIC
COUNTY COUNCIL TO ACT. Enforcement of the Grey County bylaws respecting the use of heavy traffic will be applied_by the Council, according to a decision arrived at to-day consequent on the adoptlion of a report on the subject made by the Engineer (Mr J. Higgins). The Engineer’s report stated that the roads continued to be~ damaged by excessive weights of coal, and other sawmills, he understood, were to be built and the timber carried by motortrucks. The council should consider whether the heavy traffic license fees were high enough and, secondly, whether it was not only advisable, but also imperative that the by-law forbidding certain weights—unless the cots of maintenance were first paid to the council —should be rigidly enforced. All the persons offending had been written to by the County Clerk (Air Al. Keating), but none of the offenders had come forward with any proposal, so further action was necessary. The Chairman (Air J. AV. Hannan) said the first step would be to enforce the by-law. “It seems to be no good waiting on a promise from them,” said the Engineer. Cr D. Baybutt moved that the firms be again written to, pointing out that unless the by-law was complied with, action would be taken. “That was the gist of the last resolution,” said the Chairman. He moved that they be notified that unless they make satisfactory arrangements with the Engineer within fourteen days that they be proceeded against. The motion was seconded by Cr. J. Irvine. The motion was carried, and the Engineer authorised to act accordingly.
