REEFTON NOTES

(Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, November 7. The value of the returns from the New Big River Mine for the month of September and October is £1950. The battery yielded 442 ozs, 2 dwts. gold from 634 tons of quartz and the cyanide return was 71 ozs 17 dwts bullion from 350 tons of sand. Mrs. Lamberton and her son Mr. 'Thomas Lamberton (who has been seriously ill) left by yesterday morning’s express for Christchurch on holiday. Mr. E. J.’Scantlebury arrived in Reefton on Monday evening by the Nelson car and spent Tuesday in Reefton. He left for Greymouth this morning and then proceeds to Westport, returning to Nelson on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Dick, who went to Christchurch to witness the New Zealand Cup race, returned by last evening’s express. Miss Hopkirk, teacher in the Secondary Department of the Reefton District High School, who was called to Invercargill owing to the critical illness of her father, returned to Reefton last evening. The news reached Reefton of the death at Wairoa (N. 1. on Saturday, of Mr. Frank Lynch, solicitor, son of the late Mr. James Lynch, formerly of Reefton and Westport. The deceased was a native of Reefton. He was about 46 years of age and leaves a widow. The local dairy company’s Reefton factory is now in full swing, and a most successful season is expected. The factory is receiving a very large quantity of cream from the Maruia settlers, the express from that district being more than comfortably loaded on its last trip, and the erection of a factory in that district will probably now be pushed on with all possible speed. A paragraph is appearing in some Dominion papers referring to a re-

cent, winner (Kinglike) at Gore, and istating that rumours are prevalent that the horse is identical with Fore, a -pacer that was owned in Reefton. Of course all know that some papers will publish anything, authenticated or otherwise. On this occasion their suspicions are quite unfounded, as the gelding mentioned was shot at Soldiers’ Gully, near Reefton, some few months ago, owing to his feet being in such a bad condition that his hoofs were falling off, and the horse was buried there. If the gelding had remained sound there vas little likelihood of the Reefton owner disposing of him, as the horse was so determined a racer that nothing would pass him if it were possible for him to keep his head in front, and his owner was fully aware of this.
