Miss Winnie Morrison, who has been spending a holiday at Cobden, returns to Christchurch to-morrow., Messrs M. and Chas. D. Matson, of Christchurch, are visiting the West Coast. Mrs A. Furness leaves by to-morrow morning’s express for Palmerston North. Mr W. Newton, Conciliation Commissioner, arrived from Wellington last evening. A Kabul cablegram announced the birth of a son to the Amir of Afghanistan. Mrs P. O’Brien’s condition, in the Grey River Hospital, has considerably improved, great hopes now being held for her recovery. Mr Frank Munson, formerly editor of “The Buller Miner,” and of the “Westport Times,” is seriously ill in the Wellington Hospital. A London cablegram stated that among the wreaths to Mr Bonar Law was one on behalf of the New Zealand Government, inscribed ‘‘With deep sympathy.” , . Mr 0. E. Evans, who has been connected with the engineering department of the Wellington City Council for 10 years, has been appointed borough engineer at Hastings. Mr H. T. Parry, of Hokitika, received a telegram on Monday from Christchurch informing him of the death of his mother. Deceased was 65 years of age. She leaves a son, Mr H. T. Parry, and a daughter, Miss Parry. Mr B. L. Hammond, assistant secretary of the New Zealand Employers’ Association, arrived from Wellington last evening. Mr R. A. Brooks, secretary of the Hotel Workers’ Union. Christchurch, was also a passenger by the express. Her Excellency Viscountess Jellicoe, who has gone for a trip to the East, has decided not to visit Japan on this occasion. She will spend some time in China, and intends to return to New Zealand in December, reaching Auckland on Christmas Day. The death occurred recently at Hawera. of Mr Alfred Cadman. He was. born in Greymouth 54 years ago, add received his early education here. As a young man he worked in the mines on the West Coast, in Auckland district, and in New South Wales. Later he took up fanning. Three years ago he went to Hawera, where he had resided since. He a widow and one daughter aged 14. A pleasing ceremony took place after the annual meeting of th e Greymouth Ratepayers’ Association, when the President (Mr H. H. Allison) on behalf of the members, presented Mr W. M. Richardson, honorary secretary of the Association, with a fountain pen in recognition of his services to the ratepayers. Much of the work of the association, said Mr Allison, had been left to Mr Richardson, who had proved to be the right man in the right place. Mr Richardson, in acknowledging the presentation, said that if only the citizens of Greymouth would take a little interest in their town, it would be second to none. In February next the Most Rev. Dr. Redwood, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Wellington, and Metropolitan, will celebrate his golden jubilee as a bishop, when there will be a large gathering of archbishops, bishops, and priests from all parts of the Dominion and ,Australia, as well as bishops and priests from America. His Grace, then one of the youngest bishops of the Church, was appointed to the See of Wellington in 1874, and consecrated on March 17 of that year at St. Ann’s, Spitafields, London, by the late Cardinal Manning, Archbishop of Westminster. In 1887 he was, by Papal brief, created Archbishop. His Grace is the oldest bishop, by length of office, in thesHierachy.
