TECHNICAL SCHOOL

FETE OPENS SUCCESSFULLY Brilliant weather favoured the Technical School Fete to-day. The opening procession, which wended its way from the Railway Station to the school grounds via Mawhera Quay, Boundary Street and Mackay and Tainui Streets was witnessed by a fair crowd. The procession was headed by those fearsome individuals known as the “Ku Klux Klan” mounted on horses. Next came the Pipers’ Band, which gave a Highland effect to proceedings. The band was followed by School Cadets who looked smart in their khaki suits. Decorated bicycles preceded a long line of school girls. Last were the various made-up characters of clowns, negroes, etc., playing sundry tunes on a varied assortments of “musical” instruments. The procession reached the grounds which had a busy carnival appearance, about 2.30. Mr J. D. Hutton, on introducing the Mayor (Mr W. H. Parfitt) asked him to open the Fete. The Mayor apologised for the absence of the Chairman (Mr H. Bignell), who was absent in Christchurch, Messrs J. jjj’nch, J. Goodall, T. E. Coates and F. IL Kilgour. In opening the Fete, he congratulated the Canterbury Education Board in providing such a fine structure, also the residents of Greymouth for the donation of iJ n d the building. He also congratulated the members of the Technical High. School, the Director- and his staff, and the ladies and children for the assistance they had rendered in bringing the Fete to such a successful issue. The stalls and side-shows displayed a revelation of decorations, and the stallholders were to be congratulated on the manner in which they had displayed their goods.' The funds obtained from the Fete were for the equipment and the improvement of the grounds. He asked everyone to make their purchases early and spend their money freely, remembering that they were getting good value for their money and helping to assist a cause that was a credit to the district. He added a word of praise to the sporting spirit of the State schools in Sobden and Greymouth and the Convent and Marist Bros.’ schools for closing in honour of the Fete. The decorations at the school are bright and varied: the stalls are a mass of greenery, and the whole of the school has been transformed by the efforts of a willing band of workers during the past twenty-four hours.
