The weather was gloriously line for the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting, and the attendance was again large.

—Middleton Hurdles. — Gold Star, Blue Socks and Bon Spec carried the bulk of the public support in the Middleton Hurdles. Likelihood fell at the first hurdle and Lochringa at the second. Bon Spec led to the mile post, where Blue Socks and Lord Ashlea headed him. Six furlongs from home Gold Star also joined the leaders and was with Blue Socks at the last hurdle. Once on the flat Blue Socks drew out and won by two lengths from Gold Star, with Bon Spec a dozen lengths away in third place. —Martian Miss Creates Surprise — Backers were astray in their selections for the Criterion Handicap, for which Sunny Loch, Gold Light, Boadicea, Rational and Kilbird were backed in that order, but none of them returned a dividend. Boadicea, Lovesign and Many Kittle began smartly, and at the end of a furlong Lovesign was two lengths clear of Many Kittle, who was just in front of Boadicea, while Kilbird, Rational and Printemps were in the rear. Lovesign had a lead of three lengths entering the straight, but Boadicea and Martian Miss went after her at the distance. In a fine finish, Martian Miss got up in time to win by a head, while Lovesign beat Boadicea by a short half length. Then in order came Printemps, Kilbird, Gold Light and Rational. —The Two-year-olds— Tanadees went out favourite fur the Irwell Handicap, with Lava, Lake Uru and Miss Odille next in favour. The winner, La Reve, was the biggest outsider of the field and returned a splendid dividend. When the field settled down to business La Reve and Lava were in charge, while Miss Odille and Kiki got badly away, the latter taking no part in the race. Half-way down the straight La Reve and Lava were almost on terms with Ophir, Apache and Lake Uru almost in line. A spirited finish saw La Reve outstay Lava and win a fine race by a neck, while a head further back came Lake Uru, followed by Apache and Tanadees.

—Race for the Derby. — As was to be expected, the public made Ballymena favourite for the Derby, their next selection being Wild Hind, followed by Murihaupo and Black Ronald. Murihaupo, on the outside, was the first to break the line from an excellent start. When two furlongs had been covered Kalakaua showed in front, but he soon gave place to Ballymena, who led past the six furlong post well clear of Kalakaua, Black Ronald and Murihaupo. So they continued along the back and round the top turn, where Wild Hind commenced to improve her position. Ballymena was first into line for home, with Black Ronald and Murihaupo leading the others. When asked for a final effort Ballymena stopped badly, and Black Ronald drew away from the others and won by a length_from The Polymnian, who was just in front of Murihaupo. Over a length bacg came Ballymena, followed by Wild Hind. —Hagley Handicap — Red Wink, Miss Mickey and Warhue were supported in that order for the Hagley Handicap. Viewpoint began smartly, but at the end of a furlong he was joined by Balasor, and these two led along the back well clear of Warhuo and Kilbrin, after whom came Miss Mickey. There was no change in the order until the straight was reached, when Balasor drew out from Viewpoint. At the distance Warhue put in his claim and gradually wearing down the leader he won by a length. Red Wink finished fast two lengths behind Balasor, then came Miss Mickey and Viewpoint. , —Metropolitan Handicap—After his fine showing in the New Zealand Cup Roseday went out favourite in the Metropolitan Handicap, with Enthusiasm, Deucalion, Sunart and Dame Straitlace next in popular favour. Quest and Scotch Mixture led Dame Straitlace and Roseday out of the straight, while at Cutts’s Quest was still showing clear, and after the four leaders came Zouave and Pilliewinkie, with Kukume, Muraahi and Bonetter bringing up the rear. Roseday joined Quest at the nine furlong post, but a further on Quest was out clearagain, with Scotch Mixture, Roseday and Pilliewinkie at the head of the others. At the five furlong post Quest had increased his advantage to three

lengths, while Scotch Mixture and Roseday were next, with Pilliewinkie, Deucalian and Sunart handy. Piiliewinkie and Sunart led into the straight, but below the distance Bonetter put in a fast run. Pilliewinkie was well clear a furlong from home and, though Bonetter finished well, Pilliewinkie won by two lengths. Sunart was two lengths further back, followed by Zouave, Muraahi, Deucalion and Enthusiasm. —Randolph Handicap— The public sorted out Refrigeration and Gerannial for the Randolph Handicap, Sprinkler being an outsider. Hall Mark, Sprinkler, Integrity, Refrigeration and Uleaborg were prominent when the course proper was reached. Sprinkler drew out clear inside the distance, but Gerannial, finishing fast, beat him by a neck. Refrigeration was a length behind Sprinkler in third place, and was followed by Swallow Flight and Hall Mark. —Epsom Handicap — In the last race of the day, the Epsom Handicap, Prince Ferouz carried most money on the machine, others well supported being Cleasanta, Economist and Mantua. Pickaninny led from Red Kriss, Avispado and Economist, and they ran in that order to the straight, where Prince Ferouz and Cleasanta closed up. Before reaching the distance Mantua was in charge, and ridden out she won by three lengths from Cleasanta, who was half a length ahead of Prince Ferouz, with Economist three lengths away in fourth place, followed by Whipping Boy and Some Kid.

SPECIAL COMMENTS. (Special to “Star.’h CHRISTCHURCH, November 5. In the Derby everything wanted to have the lead, but nothing wanted to set a solid pace, so finding the speed unsuitable McCarten took Ballymena to the front at the end of the first half mile, which was run in 53secs. Then, with a more solid pace set, it began to be a race, and the mile was run in 1.44 2-5. Ballymena, led into the straight, but he was thus early under’ pressure to stall off Black Ronald, while Wild Hind was also going well, and Murihaupo and The Polymninn were also closing up. At this stage it looked as if it"was a question which of the pair, Black Ronald or Ballymena, was the better stayer for one or the other to win. Ballymena cried enough before reaching the distance post, and Black Ronald, who was bred in Australia, avenged Ballymena’s defeat ol his country’s three-year-olds by winning comfortably, but all out. It may be that the kicks received from Murihaupo Settled Ballymena’s chances, but on the day there is no doubt that Black Ronald beat hint fairly and did it through being a better stayer.

The winner received an ovation on returning to the scales, as also did his rider, Jack Olsen, whose first winning comfortably, but all out. smashed up about two years ago at Napier Park. When Black Ronald had worried Ballymena down the Nasau gelding was so done that he could not stall off the challenges of The Polymnian and Murihaupo, and there is no question that had there been another hundred yards to go Wild Hind would also have beaten him. Ballymena was easily the most distressed of the seven runners on returning to the birdcage. The Polymnian finished so well that he must take a lot of beating in the Canterbury Cup. They were a good looking lot that saddled up for the Metropolitan Handicap and, with the exception of Muraahi, who went short, they all went down well in their preliminary canters. The start was good and a sold pace was set, Quest leading past Cutts’s from Roseday. There was little change in the order of running up the back, save that they all closed up. Running to the straight Pilliewinkie shot up to the leader, and taking charge, ran home an easy winner from Bonetter, who came from a long way back. Roseday died out just before entering the straight, but Sunart ran a good race into third place. Quest died right out in the straight, and is evidently not a stayer. Deucalion failed to run it out, and so did Muraahi and Enthusiasm, while Dame Straitlace could not see out the distance at the fast pace set.

NEW ZEALAND GUP. FURTHER PRESS COMMENT. (Special to “Star.”) CHRISTCHURCH, November 5. Commenting on the New Zealand Cup race, the “Lyttelton Times” says that Rouen, who had no previous credentials to recommend him as a sound stayer, was never seen near the front in the early stages, but carefully nursed he came on the scene in the straight. Dame Straitalce ran a great race. Until a few days ago she had not been regarded as a serious Cup factor, but she came on wonderfully in her final gallops, her good showing on Saturday being freely anticipated by many of those who had watched the track work. Roseday was in good position till about five furlongs from drome, when he dropped back, only to come on again in the straight. It looked as if he would have won easily but for losing his place so unaccountably. An inspection of Palestrina yesterday disclosed the fact that she had evidently been galloped on in the Cup, and this, no doubt, was the reason for her failure to show "her true form. Glentruin, by winning the Stewards’ Handicap, maintained her record of never having finished out of a place since being imported to the Dominion a few seasons ago, and the English mare’s Colonial record now reads 11 firsts, 10 seconds and one third out of twenty-two starts. Until McCarten’s performance on Saturday, no rider had ridden the winners of the New Zealand Cup, Stewards’ Handicap and Welcome Stakes on the same day. In each of the three races McCarten showed excellent judgment, bringing his mounts along with well timed late runs to score by narrow margins. Nineteen years ago L. H. Hewitt rode four winners on the opening day, including the New Zealand Cup on Grand Rapids and Welcome Stakes on Munjeet, but he was unplaced in the Stewards’ Handicap. His other two wins were on Golden Knight in the Maiden Plate and King’s Guest in the Shorts Handicap. In 1897 the late P. White won the New Zealand Cup on Waiuku and the Stewards’ Handicap on Boreas, but his Welcome Stakes mount, Nihilist, was unplaced. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. CONCLUDING RESULTS. [Per Frees Association.)
