SPORTING

RACING FIXTURES.

September 21, 22 —Ashburton County. September 22, 24—Avondale J.C. September 22, 24—Otaki-Maori R.C. September 27, 28—Geraldine R.C. September 29— Manawatu Hunt Club. September 29—Napier Park R.C. RACING NEWS AND NOTES. (By “Looker-on.”) There will be racing at Ashburton to-morrow and Saturday. Finora will carry a lot of support tomorrow. In the Penscroft Hurdles on the opening day at Ashburton last year, Falstaff (11.8) was made a hot favourite and won easily from Likelihood and Mandrake in the minor places. On the second day he carried 12.8 and ran second to Cerberus (9.13). With 10.11 in the Penscroft Hurdles to-morrow Falstaff cannot be considered badly treated.

The locally-owned Paphian has a handy weight in the Spring Handicap to-morrow, and provided a suitable horseman is on top he will make Limelight and Will Oakland travel to head him off over six furlongs. Mr. J. A. Stringer has expressed his intention of sending a fair-sized team to the Coast at the New Year, one of whom will be Red Courier, who is engaged at Ashburton. Tiff, who is suffering from a poisoned heel, will not be a starter at Ashburton.

Kukume is remarkably well just at present, and should not be long in notching a stake or two. When galloping with Warhue at Riccarton on Tuesday morning, about 100 yards from the winning post, Quarrelsome was seen to falter, and J. Beale quickly eased him up and jumped off. It was soon seen that the injury he suffered last October had again returned, all the muscles of the near hip having again slipped. It was unfortunate for Mr. F. Griffen, his owner, and J. Lindsay, his trainer, as the horse was galloping well. Combrae, who is engaged nr the Maiden Plate at Ashburton, is a three-year-old daughter of Bonrfornr and Lady Stewart. She is reported to be a bit backward yet. An authority who witnessed the racing at Wanganui holds the opinion that Padonna will turn out just as good as Tamatete and Tukia. In his latest letter to a friend in Christchurch, F. D. Jones mentions that Ballymena is doing well at Randwick. The son of Nassau and Medley has been shaping like a stayer, and Jones expects him to race well in the A.J.C. Derby, in which his trainer thinks he will be running on when his more brilliant opponents are very tired. RICCARTON TRACK NOTES. A heavy dew was against fast times at Riccarton on Tuesday, but the grass dried up after breakfast. All the work was done on the number seven grass track. Palestrina opened proceedings by covering nine furlongs in 2.3, Gay Juliet assisting her over the last seven furlongs. Palestrina was going the better of the pair at the finish. Purple Spur covered seven furlongs in 1.32. It was a useful gallop, and he finished well and gave the impression that he could have done better.

Wink ran six furlongs in 1.21, and was going comfortably at the finish. Viewpoint and Whipping Boy occupied 1.19 4-5 over six furlongs, Top Score and Dinner Bell following over the same ground in 1.19. Limelight, who is not partial to a wet track, occupied 1.22 over six furlongs. Battle Scene sprinted half a mile up the back in 51 2-ssec., without being asked to do her best.

Swallowflight and Kilfane ran five furlongs in 1.7 2-5.

Tinihanga and Economist were restricted to half-pace work, both looking well. Kukume, with an advantage in the weights, beat Castellan over six furlongs in 1.19 4-5.

Cerberus covered a mile nicely in 1.48, Cup Day assisting him over the last five furlongs.

Boadicea, with Silo as a mate over the last five, reeled off seven furlongs in 1.31 1-5. Boadicea finished in Iront and her performance was a good one. She is a good favourite for the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton, and on her form in the Winter Cup must take a power of beating. Ardour was much too good for a mate after running five furlongs in 1.7 1-5.

Pilliewinkie, assisted over the last part by Deucalion, covered six furlongs nicely in 1.20 3-5. Paphian did a working gallop ever five furlongs, while Red Courier occupied 53 3-ssecs over half a mile. Medusa was too good for Gossard over half a mile, run in 52 l-ssecs. Kenmore occupied 1.7 1-5 over the la ;t five of six furlongs, but he was geing very easily.

Prince Ferouz and Falstaff ran six furlongs easily in 1.21. Will Oakland got a break on Fmora in the jump off from the five furlongs post. Will Oakland's time was 1.6 4-5, and he was going easily at the end. Finc-ra was r' q den out to keep with her brother at the finish, but she registered a good gallop. I.ord Ash lea easily held Lord Nagar at the finish of a smart school over four hurdles. With a little experience Lord Ashlea might turn out a topnotcher, particularly as he has plenty of pace and stays fairly well. Bon Spec took 1.20 for six furlongs.
