BOXING TRAINER FINED

AUCKLAND, September 19.

At the Police Court, Charles Monien. aged 50, a boxing trainer, and Stewart Smith, 25, a professional boxer, were charged with having established a lottery known as “The Golden Casket. Evidence was called to show that agencies were opened at different parts of the North IslandA bootmaker at New Plymouth said that he was asked by accused to sell tickets in a lottery run by some Auckland business men. Witness sold 65s worth of tickets, but, on reading a circular subsequently received from .Monien he would not sell any more. All the tickets witness sold proved to be blanks. Monien! was fined £2OO on each of two charges of assisting to manage a lottery, in default three months’ imprisonment concurrent. He was convicted also on two charges of establishing a lottery. The charge against Stewart Smith was dismissed.
