ROAD TRANSPORT
MOTOR CAR STATISTICS
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, July 23. Sir Eric Geddes, presiding over the 35th anniversary of the invention of the Dunlop pneumatic tyre, said that the world now possessed 15,000,000 motor cars, of which the United States had 12,000,000. The capital invested in the motor industry in the United States was equal to the total capital of the iron and steel industry. The United States had spent more on new roads in the last 25 years than the total capital of all kinds vested in the railroads. With the improvement in brakes and non-skid tyres, the speed limit was becoming ludicrous, but an improvement and classification of roads would lead to the abolition of the speed limit. The British motor tyre industry, he said, was suffering from American competition, and also filom competition from France and other countries with a depreciated currency.
